    Curio & Relic License

I am considering getting a C&R license and was wondering how many of you have their C&R. I had an FFL for seneral years about 25 years ago, but never held the C&R license.

I am particularly intrigued by the fact that, according to the C&R list, there are several machine guns/automatic weapons that can be purchased on the C&R license (i.e.., oroginal 1928 Thompson SMG, MG-34, MG-42, MP-40...all WWII production, of course) I'm sure the prices for the eligible weapons are up there, but such would be the case with any transferable NFA firearms.

Has anyone been able to add any automatic weapons to their collection using a C&R license. I had a legal, live 1928 Thompson and a select fire CAR-15 back in the ealry Eighties, but foolishly sold them and was wondering if the C&R route is a truly viable alternative.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts,

I have mine and has save me hundreds of dollars not having to register anything. I like having it on hand. You can do automatic weapons but I think you still have to do the 500 dollar transfer but you can have them. That's if they are registered before the ban went into effect.

I got my C&R just to transfer MGs. I just got my Dewat MG08/15 form 5 approved. The owner is packaging it up now and it should be delivered to my door. No money for the transfer yet. Put the Form 5 in mid Decemeber. Got approved early March.

Well worth doing if you want C&R MGs!

The C&R does not exempt you from the Federal Tax stamp but it keeps you from having to go though a dealer (FFL/SOT). Its a $200 tax stamp on live MGs but nothing for Dewats on form 5s. Yes must have been registered before May, 1986.

One of the big advantages to C&R machineguns is they are also exempt from the requirement to notify the BATF in writing each time one is transported out of state. For guys that parrticipate in machine gun shoots this make the logistics easier.
BTW: For those who don't know this; The BATF has ruled that all full auto Thompsons are now C&R eligible regardless of when they were actually made.
I have noted a leveling off and,in some instances, reductions in the price of full auto weapons over the last couple of years. I suspect the days of ever increasing prices is over or at least has stalled for now.
Another advantage I've personally noted is a C&R license makes traveling with firearms less burdensome. Whenever I've had firearms in my checked in luggage I of course notify the airline personnel and am usually sent to TSA to verify everything is in order. I always put a copy on my license in the container with the firearm .

Thank you all for the replies, sounds like there are definitely advantages to having a C & R License.

One thing I'm unclear on though is whether the purchase of a live C & R automatic weapon if you have the license still requires fingerprint card(s) and the approval/signature of your area's Chief Law Enforcement Official (CLEO) for each purchase Put another way, once I have the C&R, can I purchase, for example, a 1928 Thompson at a gun show or from a Class III dealer by simply paying the transfer tax?

            Thanks again for your input

              Skipper:
All the regular procedures need to be adhered when purchasing a full auto registered weapon regardles of whether it's C&R or not. In Arizona for example you would still have to get approval from the CLEO* where you reside and fill out all the requisite BATF transfer paperwork. If you are unclear about the requirements in regards to this please contact me offline and I will assist you.
*In our case we are blessed with having Sherrif Joe Arpaio who actualy sends you a thank you letter for submitting the application!
