    Help! I need MG42 advice...

What should I look for in an MG42?

I'm ready to buy a live one and need advice on the quality of various manufacturers, years of production, etc. Are there any wartime manufacturers to stay away from, are any more desirable than others? Any more prone to damage/catastrophic failure? Aside from the usual questions about general condition and any structural damage which would adversely affect its function, are there any specific questions i should be asking/things for which I should be looking out?

Please, keep in mind, this is not going to be merely a "safe-queen" or a display piece. It will see quite a bit of use on the range, though I'll probably use an MG3 conversion so I can use some better quality 308 ammo than the old surplus Turkish usually available at gunshows.

Any additional advice or info on you might be able to provide on the MG42 would also be appreciated.

    Thanks!

You live in New York City and you're able to buy a live MG42?

I work in NYC and have an apartment there, but I'm a permanent resident of an NFA friendly state. Currently have about 15 stamps in the collection; though a few will go to finance the '42.

Believe me, there's a lot more people in NYC that legally own NFA beyond the borders of NY state than you'd think.

I've started to pick up a few more non-firing guns because those are the only kind of guns legal in NYC. That even took calls to three different offices where I spoke to no less than 12 different people to ask. Finally the answer was "legal but please don't do something stupid like take it outside!"

Once we move to a larger place I have a short list of what I'd like to add including an MG34 and a Soviet DP light machine.

I've never really looked into getting one, but I think they're well over $10,000 US...IF you can find one. They're not easy to come by. I have both an HKG3 and an HK51 (G3/G3k shortened to the same barrel length as an MP5) they're now going for about $11,000 to $12,000 US or more.

I'd love an MP 40, but they are too rich for my blood. I'll stick with handguns. cheaper to buy, and shoot.

                  Chris,

I've got a buddy who has a number of C&R MG's and I've had the opportunity to shoot his MP40. Nice shooters, though I'm not a big fan of the wobbly-stock. The last ones I've seen were in the $8k range for an aftermarket "tube gun" and closer to $10k for a genuine C&R. I could kick myself for passing up one a couple years ago for $3200. Definitely not a bad investment though. If you were closer to my neck of the woods, I could probably arrange for some trigger time on one.

                      Hello to all,

For your information, here's a link to a thread of my ex-MG42...I sold it recently for a very economic price. It took a lot of space, and besides some K98's I'm not really that much of a weapon-collector anymore...

I have some better pictures to share, but I have to search for them...

                      Cheers

                          Jan -

Nice looking '42. One of the 42's I was looking at (and the one I probably will purchase) is only about 1000 off from yours (5000-series serial number followed by "c" and "cra" on the bottom line)
