Ptr 44

They were made in Germany and then imported by PTR. In order to be 922R compliant they had to replace some parts such as the stock, muzzle nut etc with US made parts.
A friend made the box for me. It is kind of a fantasy item. This one shoots like a dream.
The first one that I got was a nightmare and I returned it and got a replacement rifle. Some rifles were problem children, but Jeryy Prasser at Recon Ord. has been great having Gun Smith John Andrewski fix any of the problems. One of the main problems was the repro magazines.
My dad carried a captured one in WW2, so I always wanted one.
All 200 have been sold and the current owners do not seem willing to part with them. The word is that no more will come into the US. PTR had a falling out with SSD, now HZA Halzbach, the German maker and is now looking for another importer.

I am not sure how much is just hearsay but supposedly only 150 were sold and the last 50 were used as spare parts. The American dealer was upset with the German manufacturer because they took so much to make functional and there was the problem. The American dealer had to spend so much to get them running well that he had to raise the price and the German manufacturer felt that the American was making too much profit. So they are mad at each other.
This may or may not be the case as it has been through several hands. I do wish that they would import some more, with plenty of spare parts, reasonably priced spare mags, and reasonably priced ammo. I would love one.

Ptr 44
Here is a direct quote from Jerry at RECON: "I only had 50 guns left when the Shotgun News article came out.....they all sold within 6 days!"
Yes, there were a lot of problems with some of the rifles! PTR was the original importer. There were some issues between PTR and the German company SSD. I have heard several things. SSD did have to re-organize. They are now HZA-Kulmbach. Here is the link.
http://www.hza-kulmbach.de/index.php...mid=53&lang=en
Jerry Prasser at RECON bought the whole lot early on from PTR and paid a well known FA Gun Smith John Andrewski from New Hampshire to test all the rifles with 50 rounds and fix any problem guns.
In order to import these rifles Recon/PTR hade to meet US 922R Compliance and make/replace the below parts.
US made parts:
1. Muzzle attachment (muzzle nut)
2. Operating rod (this was actually done by just replacing the op rod bolt handle)
3. Trigger
4. Hammer
5. Sear
6. Buttstock
7. Follower (mag)
8. Floorplate (mag)
Take a look at the cost of making your own parts to meet US 922R compliance, the gunsmith work and all the other importation efforts and hassle. I am not sure if Jerry really made such a great profit in terms of what any business can expect to make on a venture?
I have been watching this closely on another forum.
Yes, some of the rifles had problems and had to be sent back to John Andrewski for repair. As far as I know, all the problem rifles were repaired and are now working. Well, at least no one is still complaining on the other forum?
Jerry at RECON was great as far as customer service and standing up to his warranty. I would buy from him again in a heart beat.
This was such a difficult undertaking, I suspect that the 200 rifles that made it to the US are the last ones for a while.

They are looking for a U.S. importer for all of their products.
Any importer would need to consider all aspects of such a venture.
It would be great for collectors in the U.S. They offer a number of German WW2 rifles that many of us will normally never have the chance to own, both versions of the FG42 for example.

The word is that SSD/HZA-Kulmbach and PTR will never do business together again.
It does not seem likely that anyone would consider such a venture. First you would need all the various approvals (ATF). For the PTR44, a percentage of parts had to be swapped out for US made parts in order to meet 922R requirements.
There were some quality control issues with the PTR44. Some worked flawlessly from day one, other rifles had to be re-worked and re-worked again.
I am not sure what the cause was? I am curious to hear if the semi-automatic version (BD44) had similar problems? Do any European WAF members own a semi automatic BD44? Any issues with them?
I suspect that the problems came to light under the hard workout and use in the U.S.
I lived in Germany for 16 years, had a German hunting license and shot at a number of German clubs. In Germany, you can normally only shoot at a shooting club range. Most clubs only allow shooting from a bench one round at a time. Many clubs only allow you to load one round at a time in a rifle. From my experience, rapid fire was not allowed on the club rifle ranges.
In the U.S., well it is another story! We will load a few full 30 round magazines and expect flawless performance. Again, I think that the production PTR 44 got a real work out in the U.S.
Any comments from European WAF members on the BD44 are welcome?
