Hi,
I'm interested in your opinions of the following K98 with ZF-41 that I am being offered by a friend. This isn't my normal area of collecting, so I'm outside my comfort zone..!
He is being very upfront about his possible concerns about it's authenticity. His research has led him to believe that bnz (Steyr) did not manufacture rifles with Zf-41 scope rails, but he has stripped the rifle right down and can see no problems or evidence of tampering. The woodwork is worn in all the right places and hasn't been adapted.
Other comments he made are :
"The receiver block is stamped and dated bnz 43, and the barrel is stamped up to Ruhrstahl (avk), but you can't see this properly until you remove the stock.
There is quite a lot of wear to the bolt, which is non-matching numbers.
The scope rail look fine, but I can't see a WaA mark. There is what could possibly be a single rune stamped into the rail (but it might not be!), and this, for me, is what sounds off a faint alarm bell in my mind - this has either been added to a standard bnz rifle post-war or was done at the time (on a custom basis?). As I say, there are no signs of tampering, but the absence of a WaA mark is suspicious.
The scope itself is fine, minor wear, marked up cxn (Busch) and the mount is marked duv (who I understand were the only maker of Zf-41 scope mounts). "
Anyway, what do you think? For the price I'm being offered it, I'm happy for it to be possibly post-war put together, provided the parts are original..? I'd be interested in general opinions too.
Thanks!
