    K98/zf-41

    Hi,

I'm interested in your opinions of the following K98 with ZF-41 that I am being offered by a friend. This isn't my normal area of collecting, so I'm outside my comfort zone..!

He is being very upfront about his possible concerns about it's authenticity. His research has led him to believe that bnz (Steyr) did not manufacture rifles with Zf-41 scope rails, but he has stripped the rifle right down and can see no problems or evidence of tampering. The woodwork is worn in all the right places and hasn't been adapted.

Other comments he made are :

"The receiver block is stamped and dated bnz 43, and the barrel is stamped up to Ruhrstahl (avk), but you can't see this properly until you remove the stock.

There is quite a lot of wear to the bolt, which is non-matching numbers.

The scope rail look fine, but I can't see a WaA mark. There is what could possibly be a single rune stamped into the rail (but it might not be!), and this, for me, is what sounds off a faint alarm bell in my mind - this has either been added to a standard bnz rifle post-war or was done at the time (on a custom basis?). As I say, there are no signs of tampering, but the absence of a WaA mark is suspicious.

The scope itself is fine, minor wear, marked up cxn (Busch) and the mount is marked duv (who I understand were the only maker of Zf-41 scope mounts). "

Anyway, what do you think? For the price I'm being offered it, I'm happy for it to be possibly post-war put together, provided the parts are original..? I'd be interested in general opinions too.

    Thanks!

Hi Ade, I cannot comment on the scope and mount (I will leave that for the experts ! ) The Rifle appears to be fitted with repro sight hood, cleaning rod and sling! These are the only non original parts I can see (apart from the mismatched bolt ) I also spotted the magazine floor plate is not sitting flush,Is it clipped into place properly ? But all that aside its a nice looking rifle Regards Tobysauer.

      Thanks Tobysauer..!

I've not handled it yet, so not sure about the mag floor plate - will check it out when I handle it - thanks for pointing that out!

I should also have mentioned it is a deact rifle.

      Cheers,

      Ade

          Thanks softail,

When you say the gun is fake, presume you mean original gun with fake scope rail added???

Please let me know what to look out for on the ZF-41 to tell if real or fake - like I said before this is not my normal area of collecting, so don't know what I'm looking out for..

If the rail is fake, and also ZF-41 is fake, what would you say it is all worth, roughly?

          Thanks!

Thanks. On this website do you mean?

              http://www.everyoneweb.com/TheSmallGermanSniper/

              If so, good website.

I'm still interested in value of below rifle / scope even if it is fake.

              Thanks.

A deactivate K98 like this one I will rate 275€

                A ZF mount 150 € to 250 €

                A repro ZF SCOPE 150 € I guess??

A fake sling, muzzle cover and rod 40 €

                Regards

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated - despite looking at that website, I'm still struggling to see what identifies this scope etc as a fake? How do you tell / what is wrong with it?

                  Thanks.

I'll try to help - the ZF41 used a special rear sight sleeve with the rail milled as part of the sleeve. This rifle has the rear sight ramp replaced with an adapter that has a rail attached to it- these were never made this way. That is why he can't see anything under the wood, the rear sight sleeve is original to the gun, the rail is added by replacing the sight ramp.

The scope itself is a repro. If you compare the markings on this scope to a repro (search ebay for one) or compare to an origian cxn and you can easily tell the difference.

Last, notice the stock is not cut out for the rail. If it were a real ZF41 gun, the stock would need to be cut for the scope mount, which it isn't because the fake rail that replaces the ramp sits higher up.

And no, Steyr never did make ZF41 rifels.

Would have to agree on what has been said about the scope.... a copy. The addaptor plate under the rifle's sight is a repro 100% by these photos. A put together deact rifle for sure. OK is your not paying too much for it.
