      SS Issued PP

      Hello Chris,
Apparently Matt has not been available to respond to your post so I will attempt to do so.
Matt neglected to mention in his description that this last variation of SS issued PP is still hypothetical as of this time. None have yet been found and confirmed. I would dearly love for yours to be the first.

This last variation would have factory applied serial numbers on both frame and slide as well as be accompanied by at least one factory serial numbered magazine. (Marked on the baseplate). After serial (approx) 220,000 P where your PP falls, Walther began numbering all slides, so the only way after that point to determine SS issue is by at least one of the factory numbered magazines still being with the pistol.
Also, the prospective SS issued PP must not have other acceptance markings such as police acceptance stamps or military acceptance stamps (Waffenampts).

You asked about the "Black Book". The actual title of this book is "SS Walther PP/PPK Identification & Documents" and is essentially a sequel to the Gortz & Marschall "Red Booklet".

One of the many differences between the two is that the Red Booklet lists slightly more than 260 SS issued PP/PPK's with no confirming documents, while the Black Book lists more than 1300 SS issued PP/PPK's with supporting documents to confirm issue of every one. Readers are not asked to take the issue of any of them on faith. (The Red Booklet contained 73 pages while the Black Book contains 214).

The book is also the first to describe in detail the characteristics of each variation complete with clear photographs of each type and of unique details by which each type may be identified and serial number ranges within which they may be found.

Both Dieter H. Marschall and John P. Pearson have provided Forewords for this book and exerpts from each may be found in the Books and Media section of this Forum where it is listed for sale.

I hope the above answers your questions.

      Regards,
      Steve

Chris, a great many of the PPK serial numbers are shown in the stickies at the top of this forum's topic list- http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=432159
In addition, there is some interesting information on the distribution of RSHA PPKs and especially the very large shipment sent off for the Einsatzgruppen. This shipment that constitutes the bulk of the numbers of documented RSHA/SS issued pistols was sent to the east in the beginning stages of the Soviet invasion; yet few if any have been discovered by collectors.

              Chris,

It is possible! Can you post some pics of it? (Start a new thread though)

Steve, Thanks for answering Chris' question for me. Yes, the variation 6 SS Walther PP is no confirmed yet, but it would seem likely since there are confirmed late SS PPks with these exact same characteristics. These would be like the 7th variation SS PPk, but with much lower serial number.

I'll start another thread with the SS PPk variations for all the members here.

              Matt

Mein Gott Steve, you have acquired two PPKs that are documented to specific SS owners in the RSHA files? Way to score.
