Latest Find! Walther PP- SS issue

This is actually a SOS hold over. My friend found this gun at the SOS from another friend before I did! I finally talked him out of it. Been looking for one of these for a while now, and finally found one I liked.

So here it is! As Bill says, "enjoy"

Here was the real kicker. The magazine serial number is only 3 digets off of the gun!!! How close can you get!?!??

          Really nice, Matt!
What is the serial range for the SS-issued PP pistols?

            Douglas,

THere are 6 know variations of the SS issued Walther PP with various serial ranges. I'll break them down for you:

            Variation 1-
Has the serial number on the muzzle ring. THis one I'm not sure what the ranges are though? Not enough of them.

            Variation 2-
Has serial number on right slide flat, with NO letter suffix. Full serial number on spine of magazine. High polish, "Crown/N" proofed. Serial range 977xxx-981xxx.

            Variation 3-
Serial number on right side of slide, with the "P" suffix BELOW serial number. High polish "crown/N" proofed. Serial range- 124xxx/P-125xxx/P.

            Variation 4-
Serial number on right slide flat, with "P" suffix after serial number on slide, frame, and magazine. High polish "crown/N" proofs. Serial range- 157xxxP-165xxxP. The Crown/N proofs start disappearing around the 165xxxP range.

            Variation 5-
Serial number on right slide flat with "P" suffix after. "Eagle/N" proof, High polish. Serial range- 193xxxP-204xxxP.

            Variation 6-
Serial number on right slide flat. (Walther adds full serial number to right side of slide on all PPs at or around 220xxxP), dull military blue finish, eagle/N proof. Full serial number is now on the bottom of magazine base.

The PPk variations are simular but not exactly. There are 7 variations of those. I don't know the exact numbers, but I do know that the PPks are more commonly found than the PPs.

My PP shown above, is a variation 2. I believe variations 1 and 3 are the toughest ones to find!

Nice explanation! Thanks for taking your time to put it here.
You know I asked because I need to be alert. Who knows when or where this stuff can pop up?

Once more, congratulations for this great piece. Its condition is nice!

                    Thanks Guys!

Douglas you are correct! It's always best to know what you are looking at! You may think you're just looking at a normal Walther PP commercial gun. When in fact it's an SS gun!!!

Nice pistol, Matt. Have you looked it up to see if it is by chance listed in the Red Book? If not actually listed, maybe there are SN's close to yours that are listed?

Sorry for being lazy . . . I guess I could just pull my copy of the Red Book and look for myself, but I suspect you may have already done such research.

                            Alan,

No it's not listed in the red book. There are very few PPs listed in the red book, it's mostly just PPks.

                              SS PP's

                              Matt,
You are correct on the SS PP's. The new Black Book now has more than 1300 serial numbers of SS issued PP's and PPK's, all backed up by documents also included in the book and no new PP's have shown up in these documents.

Two of twelve pages of serial numbers shown here. The PPK's are Type one and Tyoe Two both highlightred in the book as well.
