Pretty easy- you have to unscrew the barrel and knock the small roll pin out, it comes right off.

      hi mike

thanks for your message, but should you need to take off the barrel rest first before you can unscrew the barrel?

And afterwards how can you fix the barrelrest again?

      thansk!

Well, the barrel gets uncrewed with the barrel rest in place. It is possible because the barrel nut does not have to move along the barrel. It just rotates. But there is no need to remove the barrel before removing the pin.
What is more, if your gun is deactivated and the barrel is welded to the receiver you cannot remove it.
The pin holding the barrel rest is a kind of hollow pin a little bit unriveted at the ends to hold it in place. So you have to unrivet it again to keep it from falling out.

            MP40 barrel rest

            Hi,
We're back on barrel rests again - see the other "MP40 with strange marking" thread!
You don't need to touch the barrel nut to remove the barrel rest.
As you drive the pin through from one side it'll get straightened as it passes through the lug on the barrel.
If one side of the pin is splayed out more than the other then use a straight pin punch on the smaller end.
When you refit the pin you'll need a larger punch with a shallow point to splay the end of the pin out again to keep it from coming out.
The pressed steel barrel rest is a late-war version - should be in one of the books - and is correct, but ugly
            Hope this helps,
            Grossfuss

thanks guys for all your inputs

in my honest opinion this is not an original barrel rest from 1943:

please let me know your opinions.

the upper is the cheap metal production, the down part is alu

thanks schmeisserfan! i have the "blitzkrieg" book and therefore i was already pretty sure that it was not original.

jsut curious: what type barrelrest should be with the 1943 one? it has the original 6 collar nut

simply said , the early ones like mp38 have the aluminium barrel protectors .

Then the "bakelit" version is common and at late mp40s with late collar nut ( 2 sided) , often the cheap metal version is seen .

At a mp40 with 1943 and 6 side collar nut you can take the standard bakelit

                              you are welcome

I myself don´t put the barrel protectors on the mp38s , because I like it more without and furthermore I don´t fire from a armored vehicle
