Best Sub-Machine gun of WWII?

My .02 isnt worth much, all I have shot is a later model M1 Thompson.
10 magazines at 30 rounds each makes for a lot of brass to pickup.
And that was my only complaint. Picking up brass.

Having said that, I have handled a MP38 and would love to shoot it and
the Beretta. Both look like exceptional weapons.
I have also handled a NON firing PPSH. While it is probably fun to shoot,
it looked very crude. And it seems heavier than the Thompson.

I have owned (through the years) an MP34(o), Mp44 twice, Mp40 twice, and several other subs not on the list. The pre-war guns are are all heavy, but beautifully machined and wooden stocked. The MP40 is a beautiful little race horse, the Thompson, a Mack truck. The Russian guns are expedient, and like the Japanese guns - Stop gap. Having never seen combat, who knows? I don't. I like the MP40.

The japanese used a SMG called the T100 and it was used on Okinawa, it looks like a PPSH with a banana mag on the side it is nice, I have seen one a while back.

i think Mp44 was one of the coolest,the PPSh 41 was great but as a german item lover i think the MP40 was the most reppresentative of the german army so i voted it!

My Dad used the M3 in Korea. You could hit a target but you had to start at the ground in front of your feet to do so. Least thats what he said. I shot one used by the tankers in the '80's and its OBMFG but you do have to start low .

A hard question to answer, Performance, Rate of fire, Looks.

Overall if I had to go in combat with any of these guns, taking into account the pluses & minues the PPSH & the Thompson are up their, but the MP40 has the edge for me.

The stopping power of the Thompsons 45 round does make it a formidable weapon, even if it has a 20 round clip. I've never seen a picture of a 50 round drum being used in a combat situation but if they were ever employed in the battlefield that would definetly make the Thompson number one. The grease gun is a close second, especially due to its ability to be easily manufactured, my father handled many of these weapons during his service carrier (post-war) and he always spoke highly of both of them.

It is my understanding that most GIs disliked the Thompson SMG drum magazines because they rattled when the troops were walking with them. This is obviously undesireable in many combat situations so they were discarded in favor of stick magazines with the 20 round examples being the favorite since they could be employed in the prone position. You also have to keep in mind that the drums could only be used in the 28 Models and not the M1 or M1A1 models.

My vote has to be the ppsh 41. Simple to use, quick and easy to maintain and clean . Very durable , and take alot of abuse and still function. Bonus , you can use the stick mag (30 rounds ) if memory is correct or the drum mag (72 rounds) if my memory is right. The mp 38 0r mp 40 prone to jamm alot and pain in the butt to clean and maintain. Thanks Joe Semen

Vote cast for the Italian Model 38. Very reliable, and a super accurate weapon.

Second choice: Finnish Suomi.

Third Choice : Russian PPsh-41.

My choices are for weapons that work well in all environments. Dependable weapons under all combat conditions.

Favorites for personal reasons....M1928A1!
