    Hi guys,

Have to say the mp38/40 cos its so damn cool and sexy. when i was a kid and my friends and i were running round the countryside shooting invisable germans or each other my wooden weapon was always a mp40. not that i knew it was called then but it always looked the best in the old war movies.
If i had to choose one in a war situation it would be very closely followed by the ppsh41 as they are so damn good and reliable in every way as many eastern front veterans accounts I have read say.

A burst in the chest from anyone of the subs listed to vote on will take you down, but one from a Tommy Gun will role you over. Besides its bark is worse than its bite!

I chose the Russian PPSH41 as the best.....Ease of manufacture and the high capacity drum magazine....Add to that, it's extreme durability and reliability....If I chose my favorite, it would be the german "schmeisser"....Bodes

My dad used to tell me that both he and most of his unit always preferred the PPsh41 over the MP40 because it was so reliable in comparison - he reckoned the things just kept on working no matter how they were treated. He said from what he saw (around Lenningrad, Pleskau etc) usage of the PPsh41 was very common.

He said the MP38 had a bit of a bad rep for going off by accident (in enclosed spaces).

Personally I reckon the PPsh41 looks the business - substance over design.

Then again, I like Russian motorcycles

I like the German weapons a lot. worth a lot more money too, and far more scarce! but I am very proud American. I would pick up a 27-a1, made in the good ole U.S.A. Factory workers and wemon working together to get these bad boys out in the feild. Thompson sub gun wrote a lot in history! my thoughts.

Sorry, but actually it was the men and women from soviet factories that made the best SMG and actually got the bad guys out in the WWII.

                  Hello all.

I own several of these weapons, in full auto, and have fired all on the list except the Baretta.

The Thompson gets my vote for best, by far !!! Certainly, the stopping power

of the .45 ACP in CQB situations is undisputed. Why punch someone using "pee-wee herman,

when mike tyson can punch em !! I love them ALL for different reasons, but

to pick ONE, it's the good ole' reliable Thompson M1A1 !!! JUST my 2 pennies

                  tossed into the hat !!

If the question is about which gun I would want in battle, my pick is the Thompson. The .45 ACP rounds will beat out 9 X 19mm anyday. The Tommy gun is also far superior in terms of production. The high quality means high costs which would be a problem in Germany where the factories were bombed into the ground, but US industry obviously had no problem cranking them out. It would have been even better if the M1A1 was capable of using the drum magazines. A small difference between it and the MP40 (my number two pick) that really makes a huge difference is the addition of a wooden front grip. Since the MP40 lacked any such grip under the barrel, the user would have to grasp the magazine or get burned. I have fired one and it is somewhat unnatural. On the other hand, if the question is which is a favorite from a collecting view point, its the MP40 easily. I can't wait until I can afford an original (full auto of course).

ahahah you think so huh? only thing the russians REALLY had was a lot of people which stalin didn't give hoot about, and didn't mind sending them out to their deaths!!!! I like th PPsh don't get me wrong. But I just like the Thompson. I bet the Thompson can out perform a PPsh anyday too!!!! and it wasn't the russians who won the war. it was the allies. and if the germans wern't spread so thin. germany would have owned russia.

It's only lacking you say that it was the winter who defeated the germans in eastern campaign. This thread was made to people express their technical opinion about a gun, not to express patriotism or pride. Maybe I understood wrong, but you gave the impression that you chose the Thompson only because it was manufactured by the US.
Of course Stalin was a terrible dictator and the US made a great job in the war (as well as the other allies), but once again let's get to the historical side and analyse technically who inflicted the greatest losses to the germans.

                          Guys.

If you ever find yourself in the Jacksonville, Fla. area, send me a PM,

and we can go out and shoot ALL of these weapons (in full auto),

and then you can make up your minds !!! Come one, come all !!!

I can't get you trigger time on the Baretta, but all the others,

                          are fair game !!!!

                              Hey Matthew S,

Are you sure The .45 ACP rounds will beat out 9 X 19mm anyday?
                              Just some thoughts..
                              - thousands of .45 colts and Thompsons were sent to the USSR and never used...
                              - American soldiers were during winter months begging the Belgians for FN-GP35 pistols in Corea. There 1911 were not able to penetrate the Chinese Commis' s Watted Winther clothing.
                              - Why did J-M Browning design the FN-GP35 afther the 1911?
For the sipmle reason that the .45 has no penetration capacities.
I agree with you about the 45's stopping power.
If tomorrow I have to go to a Pin Ball shooting, I surely will use my .45, for that reason.

                              regards,

                              FRANK

I voted PPSh because of its firepower, capacity, reliability.

I love the MP38 & 40. They were excellent, but capacity is lower than PPSh.

Somebody mentioned the Suomi MP31. Again reliable and high capacity. Also a great MP.

Regarding .45 vs 9mm I noticed an old letter printed in the book "Blitzkrieg The MP40 Maschinenpistole". It's a letter written by an american sergent whose team had "tested" an MP40. They fired it at a German Stahlhelm from relatively close distance. The bullet went straight through. They also tried with a Thomson. The bullet only made a dent. Not a scientific test, but a funny little anecdote from real life.
