Your latest pics show rear of base. The only really authentic short siderail I've seen has the receiver SN stamped on the back side of the base. and on the mount; the same SN is electropencilled on the optics tube and the bottom of the rail is blued. Bases and sight mounts are now reproduced.
You need one or more sniper specialists for definitive opinions.

In those last photos the blue looks much more original. Is the bayonet bar blued? If so I (or you) will need to check and see if they were being blued with the the use of the H band. I know that with the solid bands they were blued and I know that they were white in 1940 and before.....Were they being blued in 1941 regardless of the front band type is my question?

I own, have owned and handled several SS and standard SSR's. I have several questions about the base rifle and its finish, which the pics are unable to answer. I would really like to see pics of the rifle components when completely disassembled. Bottom line when looking at any sniper is that the base rifle must first be evaluated before the sniper specific components. If the base is not legit - the sniper issue is moot.
SSR's were assembled thru mid-war. The shot of the rear of the SSR base raises some concerns as it appears that circular machining marks exist where a number may have been. I am also concerned over the maching on the top of the base and wear patterns on the bottom of the mount. Not enough detail in pics as to the application of the SSR base. I would like to see more detailed pics of the scope/serial, etc. as well as all angles of the base and mount assembly.
My general view of accessories added to such a rifle (if these are original) is that sometimes their purpose is to draw the eye away from critical details.
The best way to evaluate such an item is through hands on/eyes on by an expereinced collector. IMO - this is something best accomplished prior to purchase. I hope the seller is granting you enough inspection time to accomplish this.

Machining is not correct .
BYF41 is not correct for real SSR .Last edited by sszza2; 06-04-2009, 02:38 PM.

Hi Jason
Is Base Numbered to Rifle . I do not get a good feeling looking at the Scope
and Mount as Very Typical of the ones Robert Spielauer Makes as for the Scope it should not have a Extended Sunshade . These Scopes were used early on in War , But no sunshade . and SSR`s are one of the Hardest to authenticate . Finding out about Base if it Ser# may help . You can also look at Mount and see if it has any Numbering on it this can help see if mount is Typical
of Original Production Methods Each Part would have same Number this was used for assemble purposes . I can say this it will be not an easy task to Varify as Original . I will say it is a Nice looking SSR .

Well, now I am confused Sorry to post a link to another site, but you gentlemen are my "band of brothers" and I wanted to keep you in the loop. I was all set to return this rifle this weekend......but some new insight has come to light.I think I will hold on to it a little longer as there is no time limit on the return. It seems like a hands on inspection by an expert is in order. Please post more comments there are some new pics
