    MP44: Opinions please!

    Gents,

please let me know your opinion about this MP44.

What about the blueing, original or reblued? Is there anything strange on it?

I´ll post better pictures within the next few days.

I know nothing about the MP44 other than its one hell of a cool looking rifle. I did see one on Gunbroker the other day that was a parts kit that had a section cut out of the receiver that sold for around 4000.00 I do know they are expensive and very hard to come by so my only opinion is as long as you can afford it buy it.

The receiver has a serial number with a slash '45'......So, IF that is indeed a 1945 dated weapon, it would definitely be a reblue......MP44/Stg44's had phosphated parts by this time and some were even left in the white.....Besides, I believe I see some light pitting on one of your closeups of the receiver.....Been blued over the pitting......Not a good sign......Bodes

In the end a person can only surmise......After all, we're only seeing images on a flat screen......However, having said that, my thoughts are as follows......It looks like it has a '45 date after the serial #......By 1945, these had at least some parts phosphated......And towards the end of the production run, some were totally phosphated and others left in the white w/a lacquer type substance covering......Another thing that has me bothered is the fact that the stock shows denting from use, while the stock collar appears unblemished.....Remember, these weapons were made of sheet-metal stampings, which generally doesn't hold bluing as well as machined parts......And all at a time, when the walls were "caving in" on Germany......Bodes

BTW.....Can we hear why you think it's fine?.....

Personally, I think that the MP44 is the cathegory of guns that I wouldn't care if it retains or not its original finish. They are becoming so difficult to find (mechanically speaking) that this kind of criteria can be overcome very well, if priced accordingly.

                    Hi Jack2501,

Did you buy it, or is it still for sale? Did you find out if it is reblued?

I am sure it is reblued. But it is a nice gun anyway.
Here you can see mine which is a Steyer made MP44 in white.
It has not been refurbished. It came together with 2 more MP44 from old East Germany. The other 2 were refurbished in East Germany before they were sold.

I´m in the same opinition. The kind of used black is not what I know from original blued MP44.

@ KtmStgw: Yes, this MP44 is still for sale from private in Germany. The guy wants 2.800 € for this piece minimum.

I think it's a fair price. One of those 2, I mentioned earlier, went last year for 2.500€ at an auction in Sweden.

Mp44 was reblued and defused / went back up after war.

It is a MP44 simplified of 1945 of the firm Steyr. code SWJ in 1945 WaA623
                            Good piece.

The phosphatage is not finition german guns WW2 but post war.

But i seen a couple of late MP44 which where dated 45 that where complete blued and it was the original finish. This one is hard to tell if it has a dull finish.Besides the stock is numbered on the undersite. Is that really a postwar sign or can it be original german made?
