My original and firing MP44 is marked MP44. It is dated 1945. The receiver is bonderized (phosphated). The trigger group, buttstock hardware, barrel, handguard and gas tube are blued. It has a threaded muzzle and a solid wood buttstock. It's unissued and has never been refinished. Matching numbers (except for the rear sight - of all things). Can't advise about the finish of the one in question, but there are absolutely NO absolutes when it comes to MP44/StG44 finishes and features at the end of the war.

Any MP44 is Nice! as for blue. a couple of things if the mag has a 1001 code on it its a post war DDR issue mag and if the butt has the serial number stamped on the bottom edge ( so it can be viewed when in a rack ) this indicates post war DDR use and the DDR MP44s were as a rule reblued.
My live fxo 1944 manufacture MP44 is ex DDR and is still a nice matched example that has a little post war history as well.

You will find a wealth of information on MP44s here

In our arsenal, we have a 45 dated Mp44. It was donated to our PD back in the 1960's by the local VFW. Our Chief at the time was smart enough to have it transfered & papered to us. Unfortunately it sat in a damp basement whiel renovations were goin on to the department and it was exposed to a fair amount of water for quite a time. I was told it fell over and was laying in a puddle at some point.

When I became an armorer I spent the better part of a day freeing it from the rust that seized the charging handle. It now operates but I have not had the courage to take it out "for a brisk walk" at the range.

Any how, by it's appearance it was a two tone weapon. The upper receiver seems to be bonderized while the lower section and handguard seems to have been blued. It has suffered quite a bit of surface rust. Back in the day it must have been a sweet looking weapon! The barrel is in nice shape from the gas port back to the chamber. From the gas port forward, it's a bit pitted. Oh, I find this odd as well. The stock, it's one piece hardwood not laminated. All the numbers match on this weapon.

I just thought I'd add this info since it too is a 45 dated weapon.

One more thing, it sits next to a 95% (or better) all matching Mp40.. Now that, I have taken for a run.

Are there WW2 MP44 butts with serial no. on them?

If yes, where were they stamped?

Sorry I cant answer that, I have read that it relates to post war DDR issue guns and from what I have seen it appears to be correct, as far as Im aware the WWII issue guns were not serial numbered on the wood but Im open to others views on this as I have not handled a lot of MP44s that were not DDR reissue , those that wernt did not have the serial number stamp as described.
Totally unrelated but on a similar subject , Most Russian Capture K98s have the Serial number stamped into the wood also after refurbishment.

                    Steve,
Give me a few days and I'll check when I'm back to work. You mean the area in front of the mag well next to where the hand guard is?

Yes, on the bottom of the receiver in front of the mag well. My butt stock is not numbered, just the metal that attaches it to the rifle.
