Help - K98 and M1 nemesis

I finally picked up my Springfield Armory M1 today to go with my RC K98.

Please tell me if I am on target for the M1. It is a mid 1943 rifle, Winchester trigger group, Proofed (fired & Ok'd), cartouches for Springfield. Okay, so if Im on target what should I insure the rifle for?

On the K98, I have had four of these in my life. This one is the most interesting. Other than working out the light eltropencil and horrible varnish take a look and see some real combat wear. Can anyone guess what fits that groove on the top of the stock perfectly?

Something distinctive they wore matches this notch to the top of the stock.

Considering the source, I imagine it was fired a lot.

Thanks Lon. I was looking at some of the gunsites and notice these are all over the place in terms of price. Anyone else think Im right about the date, mid-war. Serial number range seemed to fall in '43.

Looks like I have a weekend of research ahead of me. I want to get this right. Plus I'll be putting my Springfield sling on it.

My reference books put your receiver at more like April/March of 1944. The cartouche on the side of the stock is a post-war Defense Acceptance stamp. The 12 SA bolt is correct. Is the entire trigger group all Winchester? Or just the guard?

Is this a CMP rifle or an import? I would think in today's market $800 to $1000 would certainly cover the replacement cost for a pretty standard mix-master M1 Garand, unless it has some other rare parts or has a matching barrel. IMHO I think even $800 is on the high end.

I'll have to remember how to field strip this piece. It's been since 1990 that I used them in funeral details and for Drill Team. That's gonna be the only way I find all the numbers and marks.

I just picked up 6 NOS clips for it but will need to get some lighter load 30-06 surplus ball. I dont want to put 175 grain 30-06 Remington through it. I hear today's hot loads will eat the action right up on these.

I would NOT shoot commercial loads through this rifle. I have a bunch of Lake City M2 ball that I bought a few years back. I would look for some of that, as it is still out there. There is also Greek boxer primed non-corrosive surplus that I have seen as well. I personally would not shoot this rifle much. It is a collectable after all. I have a 54' Garand H&R and I dont shoot it.
