Where I live (Jersey, Channel Islands) I've found a higher occurance of black gripped byf's, the last 4 purchased all had this feature. It's likely when the German occupation commenced June 1940 until our liberation May 1945, the German garison were early equiped with the then current Mauser issue.

"Black Widow" was coined by a dealer here in the US.

It was a selling issue. Shuck and jive to promote an undesirable piece.

A BW should have black grips and mag bottom.

Back when collectors mostly wanted pristine Imperial pieces, Nazi stuff was overlooked and disregarded.

BWs were a bit crude and considered bottom of the barrel last ditch pieces.
This was in the days of $50 rigs.

A certain dealer came up with the "Black Widow" phrase and the race was on.

This has been kicked to death on most boards.

Mike is absolutely right on this one. "black widow lugers" , "dual tone P38"s", "gray ghost P.38's" ( steel stamped grips) were all names made up by collectors. They sound good good though , have stuck over the years and are used to identify certain variations. A nice "black widow" 95% + pistols are currently going for about $2500 . There are a lot of faked grips around due to this fact.
