    Ok, but do you guys think it is safe to fire surplus ammo that has split csaing necks? Like I stated above, I have a ton of that ammo, but I don't want to fire it until I find out if it is ok to fire the rounds with the cracked case necks....

      No, this ammo should be burned in an incinerator! Ammunition damaged to this extent is not safe to use.

        Howdy,
        I put surplus ammo through my k98 and I used the water method to clean it. after that I didn't want to go through the hassel of it again and I use remington 8mm. Expensive yes, unforntunatly, but non corrosive so easier to clean. I hear some people steam there barrels. its up to you. with prices of ammo though I havent shot the gun in a while, now I am just back to my ruger 10/22, I wish 223 was cheaper also, oh well.

          fire a couple rounds and look at the primers, befiore and after, if the primers come out looking like they did before then its a good load, but i the primer swells and goes flush with the case then you got a hot load, wither way a Mauser can take it.
