    Shooting My Mauser K 98

Greetings Gang! I am thinking of putting a few rounds through my Mauser and wonder if anyone has a recommendation for a brand of 8mm ammo? I have heard the ammo for the 8mm Mauuser sold in the USA is not as Hot loaded as ammo sold in Germany?
So can any member give me advice on a brand available here in the USA?
    Thanks much!

To answer your question to the best of my ability, the only 8mm US ammo is from Remington. Very expensive. I purchased East German ammo for pretty cheap, but yes, those are hot loads, jamming the bolt because of casing expansion (Heavy power machinegune ammo) I have purchased alot of turkish ammo, and hav got bad luck with primers that dont want to work. so i have to try and try, then they might go off. Shooting the Mauser seems difficult for me, but a few random places on the internet can provide good sources for ammo. you just have to look

I hope this helped a little.

I use Remington which yes it's expencive but I've not had any problems with them. About 20 some odd years ago before CA changed it's laws I was able to pick up a crate of armor piercing rounds from Germany and used them. Man I had so much fun withthem I went thru them in a day.

        8mm ammo

Unfortunately the days of cheap 8mm ammo looks to be in the past. Your best bet is to shoot military surplus 8mm. There is some 1970's production 8mm floating around on the surplus market. A year ago you could buy 440 rd tins of 8mm Romanian which shot real nice for around 50$ a tin, AIM Surplus did have some 8mm Romanian a week ago. The Turk ammo has a reputation for being loaded fairly hot, but the Mauser handles it well. I personally have had good luck with Turk 8mm, but that may be the exception to the rule.
        Check:
        J&G Sales (out of Arizona
        AIM Surplus
        Southern Ohio Gun

Personally, I've found that the Romanian ammo shoots quite well. Seems a bit "hotter" than some of the commercial hunting ammo that I've come across, but shoots very accurately.

Buy a single stage press and load your own.

                  Mauser Ammo

                  Two good points brought up....

Anytime you shoot surplus ammo make sure you clean the bore, most surplus ammo is corrosive. There are numerous articles on gun forums and the net on how to clean corrosive salts. Personally I use hot soapy water, follow with a few swipe throughs with patches coated with windex, followed by Hoppe's #9. Don't know if it is "correct", but it has always worked for me.

A good option is to reload, it is much cheaper going that route, and you can customize loads to a weapon, resulting in greater accuracy, etc. Reloading is not as hard as some folks make it out to beat, I'm basically self taught when it comes to reloading, I read the books, asked questions of people who did it, and went from there. One problem with 8mm reloading is that there is no cheap source for affordable 8mm FMJ bullets, I have been relegated to having to buy more expensive soft point bullets. If anyone knows of a source for cheap/inexpensive 8mm FMJ bullets send me a PM.... Chris...

Small price to pay for all that fun.

I recently purchased over 700 rounds of Turkish 8mm surplus, but when I got it, almost every other shell neck was cracked to some degree! It was not mentioned in the listing, but the guy won't get back with me... Therefore, I guess I will have to keep it, but is it safe to fire? And, even if it is safe, will it damage my guns in any way? Thanks for any and all help!

i had good luck shooting surplus ammo great as a matter of fact, but i did buy some sellier and bellott that would not work feeding up out of the magazine. i measured it and it was a little shorter or longer than the surplus, i can't recall which but it definitely wouldnt work. it was visibly different in length. so i assume no where close to actual mill spec.
