    MINT G98/40 jhv 43 RIFLE

..................at least I consider it pretty mint.

In May of this year (08) I purchased a private collection consisting of 8, real, WWII sniper rifles (3 really good German rifles out of the 8) and 14 other period battle rifles from various countries. Every rifle was purchased for a friend of mine who collects sniper rifles. He cherry picked what he wanted from the other 14 rifles and gave me the rest. I in turn sold what he had given me to another friend and used the money to purchase this G98/40. Being that I have only owned one other 98/40 in 40 years I considered myself pretty lucky because this example is by far the most mint 98/40 that I have ever seen. Aside from a couple of very slight stock dings and two or three ever so slight rubs against the bluing (which can hardly be seen), I have never seen one so nice and thought I would post some pictures of it. The entire weapon is matching, inside and out. The only thing that it lacks is the original Hungarian style sight hood which is somewhat smaller and circular. The 98k type that is has on it now appears to be original to it, or at least it as it seems to have been on it forever.

This particular rifle belonged to the neighbor of the fellow I bought all the other weapons from.

    Regards,

    Chuck

PS: If anyone has an original sight hood I might be interested (don't know if I really want to change it out or not) in it.

You can see how the bolt knob is just ever so slightly rubbed on the high point.

                    Very nice.

I have wondered for a long time if the much sought 98/40 sight hood was really the one that was generally used these rifles in the first place!

The standard 98k sight hood fits perfectly, at least on mine and I know of a couple of wartime photos of these rifles not to mention 2 untouched vet bringback examples that also had the 98k sight hoods.

Adding a rounded variation of the sight hood to one of these rifles may in fact be another example of collectors making something "right" when in fact it is not the way it really was.

The first 98/40 I owned had a 98k sight hood. I also know of another that a friend has. His uncle brought it back from the war and it too has a 98k sight hood. Even with these examples I have a knowledgable friend who insists that they were issued with the Hungarian style hood. The only example he has is a pre war Hungarian M-35, which of course has the Hungarian hood in place.

Perhaps we will hear more on the issue? Some war time photographs of these weapons in use would be interesting.

Bad news..... the bolt looks like a bad karma renumber ( fraud ), and the wood has definately been messed with ( refinished ).
The sight hood for the G98/40 is the same as used on the 35M and the 43M rifles , a 98k hood is incorrect.
I'd get my money back ASAP on this "deal".

Thank you for your concern but I can assure everyone that this rifle has never been messed with. It has neither been re-numbered or the finish altered.

I have tried, with what pictures I have taken, to show the bolt SN along with the receiver and front barrel band SN.

I have also been offered some very serious money for this rifle from some of the better known dealers that frequent the big shows and have contributed to some of the better collectors books on German firearms.

                              Absolutely no worries here!
