Thank you for your concern but I can assure everyone that this rifle has never been messed with. It has neither been re-numbered or the finish altered.
I have tried, with what pictures I have taken, to show the bolt SN along with the receiver and front barrel band SN.
I have also been offered some very serious money for this rifle from some of the better known dealers that frequent the big shows and have contributed to some of the better collectors books on German firearms.
PS - the cleaning rod and 98k sight hood are modern made and the hood for certain does not belong on this rifle.
PS ; The rod is a modern repop part as well as the incorrect 98k hood someone stuck on the front sight base.
Absolutely no worries here!

Chuck ; "concern"....... the bolt is a sloppy renumber. I've owned a hand full of G98/40's when I collected WW2 arms and the bolt is most certainly humped. The fact the wood has been "cleaned" does not escape my eyes either. The repop sling is just icing on the cake.
Look at the serial fonts on the bolt and the lack of proper alpha prefix and it's improper placement , unless I am mistaking "it" for a ding. Whomever sold you that humper is a crook.

Again, and nothing personal towards you or your thoughts,............but nothing has been changed or altered on this firearm and it is 100% correct. No rebluing, no sanding, no altered numbers, etc. I know that the photos do not do this rifle justice but they are the best I can get with my 10 year old digital camera.
For any other doubters that may be out there, I don't know what else to say except that if you had it in your hands, and have the experience (not saying that Gew 98 doesn't), you would be able to tell immediately what a pristine rifle you were holding.
The line of people wanting to purchase this rifle is long, with two well known reference book authors on German firearms among those who are waiting in this line.
Call me a "doubter" too, I think the bolt has been renumbered to match and the wood overcleaned or lightly refinished. Compare your bolt to an original 98/40 bolt and the difference in serial size and font is obvious. The lacking serial suffix is a major signal.
I agree that the bolt does appear to have been re-numbered. The lack of the suffix and the size of the number stamps can not be explained in other way. Also by default if the bolt has been re-numbered the entire rifle would have to be re-blued as well because the finish of the bolt and the other metal matches too well to be of two different origins and ages.
I am not doubting anyone's knowledge here. What I do doubt though is a persons ability to say "without" any doubt that something IS what they think it is, when it ISN'T, and with their statments ( without a hands on inspection ) have others without the knowledge think they are correct.
Here is a picture of the bolt number and suffix letter (h). Above it is the receiver SN and suffix letter (h). Same fonts, same suffix letter!
There are three different sizes of SN's on this weapon. All proper. All the same font. And, again, NO,................this weapon has had nothing done to it's stock.
I believe that the controversy here is due to no one ever having actually seen a G98/40 in such pristine condition before.
When the batteries in my camera have re-charged I will post the different sizes of SN's found on this rifle. Which,............is not an uncommon feature.
Original condition matters nothing in this case, your bolt numbers are fake whether your rifle is 100% condition or 10% condition.
Your additional images are more than adequate to ID this as fake, and merely reinforce my opinion that your bolt has been faked. The SAE dies present on your bolt can be found in any hardware store in the USA.
I just check my 41 98/40 and the size of the bolt stamping looks the same as the rest of my rifle and the letter suffix is right below the 4 digit number and not to the side.
