Battle damaged MG optic

Based on the angle of the picture I would hesitate to assert that. The metal is thinner up on top and what is visible just looks like simple corrosion. Of course a more direct photo of the damage could very well change all of that.

Quite agree Garry, hence the IF caveat in my post, lots of things classed as battle damage that are not, could easily have been broken when dug up ,seen a few vids where they are actually just ripping bunkers up with excavators . Equally it could have been bashed with a shovel prior to bug out to prevent capture .
Curcumstances of discovery are every thing, but as i said lots of things are just being ripped out of the ground, any story that "could" be established is just gone

Re sight,

One other thing to note, assuming the unit is actually siezed up due to the condition ? The optics are actually near as hell looking at the 4 o clock position. That is almost looking back over the gunners right shoulder.

It could have been set up for Indirect Fire, sighted in on the RK 31 or other MGZ during the set up process. Perhaps an unfortunate artillery barrage caught the MG unit while setting up?
