    1920 artillery luger markings

I picked up a 1920 commercial artillery luger, it's marked "SLP01" and "S.P. C." on the front of the grip. Any idea what they stand for?

The marking S.L.Pol. stands for the Sächsische Landessicherheitspolizei, the State Security Police of Saxony in the 1919-22 period. These police were too military for the Allies and they were reorganized and distributed among the major cities. This pistol and its owner were assigned to Chemnitz, hence the S.P. over C. marking which stands for the Sächsische Polizei of Chemnitz.

Your description of the Luger as a "1920 commercial artillery" has me very puzzled. No artillery Lugers were manufactured after 1918 and none were ever manufactured for commercial sales. Can you post photos of this?

I can't post photo's any more, sorry. The barrel is stamped "Germany" and the 1920 I think is a restamp. I think this gun was assembled for US sales in the 20's/30's.

      P.S. Thanks for the information!!!

The 1920 is a Reichsweir property mark. And the Germany stamp on the barrel is a import mark. Hopefully all the part numbers match on your artillery. A all matching unit mark artillery Luger is a good find. Even with the import mark.

Is the barrel serial numbered to the pistol?

A friend and I bought several artillery lugers from one collection. I got 1, a 1914 erfurt all matching (even the grips) about 85%. He picked up 3, one 1917 dwm all matching 98%, a 1917/1920 dwm about 90% and the unit import marked one which looks reblued.

dhunter, you seem to be avoiding giving an answer about the barrel serial number. The first step in discovering the US history of this gun is to tell whether the barrel is properly serial numbered to the gun. It would be serialized in the same manner as your Erfurt if it were a German police/military piece.

Im not avoiding giving you an answer, The barrel number does not match, as with every other "Germany" marked artillery luger I have ever seen. I was asking about the unit markings unless you forgot.
