N and P are joined together and the V is smaler and tucked underneath the P. there are also the letters NTT together with another stamp that looks a little like an eagle ( not much though) ! . any info would be appreciated thanks . kevin

    Hello,

Pictures could help, if you can take some that would be great. I wouldn't mind seeing the rest of the pistol as well.

And if you fail to get an answer here, I always recomend the Luger Forum (http://www.lugerforum.com/)

      Hi Rubbersoul,
The closest i can find is an M and P joined together, no V though.
This is a mark for the Portuguese Navy.

      Steve.

          Kevin,

the NPv marking is an Austrian Nitro proof (the smaller "V" stands for the Vienna proof house). The eagle should be the Austrian eagle.

There should be present also a number like 1234.56 . The first digits left to the period is the running number of the proof journal, while the number right to the period is the year of the proof (regarding the example: this would be the 1234th gun proofed in 1956).

          Regards

          Martin

Hi Martin, thanks very much for the info, very helpful. cant find any other numbers though. in view of the fact that it has austrian proof marks, does it mean that the gun was imported and issued in austria at some point ? thanks again kevin

              Hi Kevin,

well, it might have been imported to Austria or it just was re-proofed in Austria - for whatever reasons (some people thing, the old proofs are no longer valid).

              Regards
