        Thanks Ken, I thought I was wrong but you too have the same impression, by the shape of the handle I thought it was a FAIRBAIRN SYKES knife I can't see the pommel clearly though. Surely this guy had taken several pieces of Allied equipment to recycle for his own use.
        It's a really amazing picture

          Never seen a FS knife with clip on the scabbard. And, he did not fight in an area hold by british troops. To me it looks like a standard german boot knife.

                          Hello,

                          This is a great picture of these soldiers.

                          I believe the knife he wears on his chest may well be a FS knife known as a Large button pommel 2nd pattern.
                          It is difficult to be sure but the grip profile seems to match as does the crossguard.

                          The grip on this particular version is more angular than the usual 2nd pattern grip.
