    Famous SS soldier...

    Hi everybody,

I think that you may liked to know this: you all probably know that famous SS MG gunner pictured during the Ardennes Ofensive (around Poteau) holding Browning HP-35. For many time I wondered what happened to this guy and if he had survived those harsh years.

Well, in a post in another forum, it was told me that he was finally identified as Walter Armbrusch, and he was live until a couple of years ago, which was confirmed by a forum member who was his neighbour !!! Amazing, isn´t it?

On the other hand, I always thought that he could have earn some money because of the use of his image by dioramas and 1/16 scales companies. Could you imagine that?

And here are the image of this famous and clearly though veteran:

Very interesting. There were several photos taken of this man all on this same role of film taken during the early stages of the "Operation Autum Mist". One shows him with some American cigarettes, and one other one shows him clearly with an MG42, and he has a Browning Hi-Power in his hand.

If he did in fact survive, I wonder what ever happened to this Browning Hi-power?

      Very interesting...

      Hi Matt,

I hadn´t thought about it! Anyway, I think that it was handed over to some GI or Tommy, who would never imagine how famous is his gun!

      Regards,

      Douglas.

        Poteau Vet

        Hello

after my visit in Potau this May and the Museum runned by Rob de Ruyter I was told that the guy ist still alive in the US but refuses to get in contact with the museum.
The guys from the Poteua museum are still trying to get in touch with him but no reply because it seems that he has enough from this wartime. But now Mr de Ruyter is in touch with his neighbour.

        Funny isn't it?

Thanks for these infos guys. Glad to read that this legend survived the war but to bad he doesn't want to hear about WW2. I would have flown to the States just to meet him.

There is a big discussion about him, its not sure yet who he is, i believe.
This thread is from 2003, in 2004 Camp Upshur says this on another forum:

              Gentlemen

This is NOT repeat NOT Wally A. This has gotten out of hand and is a good example of how this otherwise credible forum is in fact stiffling our shared intention of historical research.

I say again , I personally know Wally, This internet myth which is being perpetuated here , has its origins in one of our most credible members making an incorrect comment on this forum of information which I provided (search the name for those so interested ).

As I have stated in refutation before, there is a Wally, he was in the LAH, he did carry a MG-42, he was in the Ardennes Offensive, BUT THIS IS NOT HIM.

This 'famous' photo does deserve to be researched to determine who it is of. Perpetuation of incorrest opinion only chills further historical query.

Lastly, I ask once again. If anyone has any information on Wally please post it, He has only one photo which his mother secretly kept and after the Dachau internment, very little documentation remaining of himself !

              Respectfully
              Camp Upshur

Really? Did they survive the war?
I know that one of them, who was carrying a MP44 and wearing a pea dot jacket, walking at the sideroad, was killed in combat a few days later...

Yes at least 2 of them, some other identified soldiers of those photo´s died though.
The Poteau museums knows those 2 veterans.

As a matter in fact I am working on this man on 1/6 scale figure. It apperas as he is wearing a US Poncho cut down to fit him on top pof his smock and he has helped himself with some US M43 army trusers.

What do you think is he wearing the smock auttom or sring side out. With the green and mud I would say spring maybe, yet I am not sure.

Does somebody have a photo of tsome US M43 trusers to see the right color? Is is brounish or greenish?
