This is were it get crazy! Look at the numbers they match the rest of the gun then look at the picture up top were the numbers are X out??They are the same number?????
It's hard to tell from the photos, but my first reaction to the finish was to think of the Russian (i.e. Ukraine) "hot dipped" guns (i.e. refinished) that have been imported en mass over the past decade or so. Have you pulled the grips to see if an importer's mark is stamped along either of the sides of the front gripstrap (or in some other location where it would be concealed by the grips)? The importer's marking may be very faint and/or may have been removed by an owner up the line from you.
Also, the X'ed out SN on the mag tends to suggest Russian re-work, in my experience.
Like I said - it's very hard to tell much from the photos.
I too had the first reaction of this one being a dipped gun.
The serial numbered mag is definately a bogus job. Very un-even, and ugly. Also, Whoever did it, forgot to add the letter suffix as well!
Also, the grips are definately from an early war P38. (like an AC40-AC42) Take the grips off, and see if there is a serial number, and/or waffenampt on them. If there is, then they are early war grips.
Late war Walther grips are usually much lighter in color. They should look more "reddish", like the ones on my AC45 shown on page 1 of this thread. Early war grips are usuall very dark brown, almost black, like these.
Hi,Thanks for all of the help!!! Either way Shooter Or a collector Gun for the price i paid iam very happy!! So iam not trying to make this something that it is not.But its 100% no import ,The mag If you think abought it realy hard,Why would someone trying to hump it up Cross out numbers that were 100% Right in the first place??And even if the mag is completly Bogus I can just find the right mag as easy as anything! The gun when it was shipped from one gun store out of state to another the guy when i went to pick it up i even asked him abought it being all original finish and he said it looked good but there was one spot he said might have been touched up??He said maybe ??he was not 100% but he did say The 45 AC ones were different in all parts some of the time ,And the grips are more a deep brown and i posted the markings that are on the inside?I had many P38s in the years but no 45 AC !If the sun would come out bright on day this week i could realy get some nicer pictures! But thanks again ..
