    STG44 & MP38 semi auto reproductions.

Take a look at this link found by coincidence: http://www.ssd-weapon.com/index.htm

A German company that builds brand new and very exact copies of the Stg44, the MP38 and the German Sten, Gerät 3008. All in original caliber and semi auto. Many small parts are interchangeable with the originals. Magazines are originals that have been refinished. They are legal in Germany since they have been made to function only in semi auto and cannot be converted to fully automatic function.

I could be seriously tempted by these

I didn't think semi-autos (except for pistols) were legal in Germany?

          Import

Depends on which party is in office !
Our import laws are so fickle. I don't know the answer but my guess is the '44 is o.k. as a rifle but the others are not based on barrel length. I am sure other forum members can give a more accurate answer.

I have not measured the barrel lengths, but in the US, a rifle MUST have a 16 inch barrel. The MP40 would never be imported without a 16 inch barrel, much like the semi-auto Israeli UZI. With the short barrell, the MP40 would be considered a sawed off rifle, or a shoulder stocked pistol, either which would require class 3 license, registration, and tax.

If the MP-44 has a 16 inch barrel, it can be legally imported so long as there are no current restrictions on imports with pistol grips.

It would be best to contact one of the larger firearms importers to check if they are available to import into the US.

I want an MP-44 semi auto and would buy one in a heartbeat, if they are legal. I would think ammunition would be a problem, unless you resize and reload your own ammo.

If anyone hears more, please keep this thread up to date.

You raise a good point. Ammunition for the STG would be hard to find. Only option is to reload I guess? But still one must respect how faithful the maker has been to the original layout (within the boundaries of gun laws).

In Germany there're different types of permits (some with limitations on amm. capacity), but generally you can legally own semi auto rifles both historic and modern.

Actually rifles with less than a 16" barrel are classified as "short barreled rifles" by the BATFE and require a $200 transfer stamp. Kahr Arms, which now owns Auto-Ordnance, offers SBR versions of the M1A1 and M1927A1 Thompson SMG (making the M1927A1 into a M1928A1 lookalike). The problem with the MP38 is that it fires from an open bolt, which is a Bozo no-no here in the US now.

                        Ammo

8mm Kurtz is not a problem as its being made again by a company called "partizan" ( something like that ) in the former Yugoslavia.

I just measured the barrel length on my MP44 and it is a little over 16". If I didn't have my MP44, I would buy that semi auto version in a heart beat, especially at that price as the full auto papered ones are running at between $13000-$15000 here in the states. At my local range I can only fire semi auto only so most of my shooting is semi anyway. Unless you go to a range that allows full auto, you'll have to shoot it semi auto anyway as I think the no-auto restriction applies to most ranges because of the liability of the possibily of rds going over the backstops. There are not too many ranges that allow it.

Let me tell you, it is one sweet rifle when firing semi. It's quite acurate and holds good groups on the target and there is hardly any kick. Mine has a great trigger pull. Everyone who shoots it always remarks on how impressed they are in it and also in the trigger pull.

Ammo is now available for about $21.00 a box/20. Unprimed cases are also available at about $27.00 per hundred now, in the past if you reloaded for it, you had to make your own brass.

I reload for mine so in pro-rating the cost between the cases, bullets and powder etc. Figuring my case life about 4-5 times at least, it only cost me about 4-5 cents a rd. Ray

I've been watching this chaps progress for about 4 years now and it looks like he's finaly won his battle against the BATFE to produce these.

There is a serious price imbalance between the USA and the rest of the world

I have just purchased an excellent example MP44 full auto & original for $3000 NZ or ($1860 USD) and turned down another rougher one for $1736 USD

We are very lucky here in New Zealand as collectors. Although we have make our own 8mm kurtz like everyone else

                              regards
