                  Wonderful piece

                  Bill,
This one is quite out of the ordinary!! Do the Waffenampts mean that it was subsequently issued/acquired by the Germans?? Do you have any history on this particular rifle??

Glad to have you back posting again..

R, The WaAs are standard on both contracts...Really odd.. It does not mean Wehrmacht issue..Even though it is stated in comtempary books that some were dirverted to the Wehrmacht, and one is reported with Luftwaffe property markings... I have no history on the rifle...The cross hatched large brown bottom attaching sling, is quite odd also......BILL

How are you defining 'Wehrmacht issued'? Do you mean branch acceptance markings such as E/H, E/L, or E/M?

I am not aware of any '37 Portuguese rifles with E/H or other branch acceptance markings but perhaps they do legitimately exist. Taken as a group, I have found '37s to be in significantly more worn condition than '41s. This suggests that the '37s did make it out to the Wehrmacht for issue. I also believe there is photographic evidence of the '37 in use by the Wehrmacht. In any case, the Portuguese certainly had no cause to put wear on them.

As I recall there is a sticky thread on Gunboards which maintains serials for E/H '41 Portuguese rifles. I own a matching period correct '41 with E/H in mid 90% finish. Though not mint, I consider it a rarer and more desirable rifle than a more typically found mint '41.

I have never seen a Port. mod.937 marked with any of the standard Wehrmacht stock markings of H,M,or L...There is a Port. contract listed in BBOTW with Property of the Luftwaffe a 41 contract.. My M 937.. Shows a lot of use, unlike the mint ones that came in from Canada some 30 odd years ago...BILL

                          Hi
I heard that the ones that the german army did keep were those from the 1941 contract. They did not deliver the full order of 1941 and kept them for the war effort. Is that right?
                          Best,
                          Ace

I once had a 1937 Portuguese bringback. It had a replacement stock and the stock was from a Spanish Mauser with Falangist proofs.
I thought that was interesting and maybe a clue to it's being in Spain at one time.
