    What would you carry?

A little thought experiment I run from time to time is what would you carry if you knew that there was a massive collapse coming(asteroid hit, economic meltdown etc.), you get one rifle and one handgun. What would they be?

The situation reminds me of one of my favourite books, "The Death of Grass" by John Christopher. A terrible pest sweeps the earth that kills all types of grass which leads to global famine. The book is set in Britain and shows how the country turns into anarchy in a few days. The story is about two families trying to travel from London to a remote farm area in Wales. A great read!

Anyway getting back to the point of the post... Certainly as far as the handgun goes this will ignite the usual 9mm/.45 debate. Personally I would want something reliable with plenty of ammo, so would probably go for the Beretta 92FS range, one with a heavier slide and 15 round magazine in 9mm. Plus you could stockpile more 9mm per square foot than .45. Plus, plus the 92FS has never jammed on me.

As for a rifle, hhmmmm don't know as I don't have much experience with them. I guess something strong and reliable that's not going to break... something simple like an AKM.

Sig P220 .45 cal. & 12 gauge street sweeper (with rotary drum)

I am a huge fan of the .45 caliber and 12 gauge as well, as they both possess excellent knock-down power, and one or two shots is usually more than sufficient for the job. In the scenarios mentioned, the weapons would almost certainly need to be employeed at close range, so these are my choices (hypothetically speaking).

Yeah the street sweeper is a very good idea.

          9mm Browning HP and 7.62mm AK47.

Both are very reliable and ammo would be easy to source. Parts or a replacement AK should be easy to find too given that (If the TV programme I watched is correct) there have been enough made to arm every 60th person on the planet.

          Cheers, Ade.

In extremis, a Browning HP and any large capacity pump shot-gun in 12 guage. In both instances ammunition would be relatively easy to find. I do love my Marlin under-lever in 357 mag though, 10 rounds in the tube and very quick and easy to use.

Hope it stays a nigtmare though.

                  Hi

I would carry my 92 FS Brigadier although this will most probably not
convince everyone but I really like it.
Then I would also carry my M14.

                    My choice

A glock 17 (the best assault pistol in the world IMHO) and a pump action Franchi Spas.

                    Regards Craig.

Swedish Ak4b (think its G4A3 or something in germany), and for my handgun, hmm, I dont know much about weapons, so I say simply a Glock 18.

Interesting trend that most people seem to going for a shotgun rather than a rifle?

                          Cheers, Ade.

Yes it is. Also concern about person/person conflict sems high. My personal choice would be a Ruger 10/22 in .22lr for the rifle equipped with a scope, and for my handgun I would go with a 6" Colt Python in .357 magnum. The 10/22 is for me an obvious choice for foraging and in a pinch it will work quite well in a defensive situation. The Colt is there for the simple reason that if attacked by an animal I feel it is the minimum useful caliber to deal with a dangerous animal.

                              Interesting so far, though.
