    hoem vs countryside

    Yep,

It looks as if many people prefer staying at home defending themselves rather than going to the countryside and live in nature.

I think that it depends on where you physically are or are planning to be when and if something happens. In an urban environment something like a shotgun makes more sense IMO than in the countryside where a long range weapon might be more advantageous. Also are you going to carry it all day long with ammo, or have a base of operations?

That said - if it is something that you have to live with and carry all day long then an aluminum or plastic framed handgun and lightweight rifle with a folding stock might be a good solution to the problem.

While they lack magazine capacity, a well made open toleranced M1911A1 in .45 caliber would be good for close in work. And one of the Colt AR15 collapsible stock series would probably be good enough for intermediate ranges.

A change in the scenario means a different weapons “suite” might be better than another one for a given situation. Which includes weapons better suited from my perspective for everyday use. FP

        Weapons

I have to say I am a big fan of the 1911 series pistols (I have several) but in a meltdown situation I think I would have to opt for the Glock 17 and either a folding stock AK-47 or a CAR-15. It seems that 9mm, 7.62x39 and 5.56 Nato can be found everywhere. In a pinch I do have a Glock 21 in .45 but it seems the thought in this thread was ease of ammo supply. Another thought might be a pistol in .40 S&W as many, many police depts have gone to that caliber making it very popular to the public. Hey, if you have to carry a pistol you might as well carry two! As for our English friends I have to admit the Hi-Power is a great pistol and sits well in your hand.

i'd go with a WW2 USGI M1911A1 .45 (from any of the contractors, they're all good) and a post war No.4 MK2 .303 enfield rifle. although, i do like the FN FAL very much...

I have owned just about every auto pistol that there is and my first choice would be the SIG 220, or 1911A1. for a rifle it has to be the Colt M4 or simular Carbine. The full length AR would also be OK.

I'm getting the new Springfield 14 round 1911A1 which would be a good choice as well for a handgun.

You guys can keep your glocks, and berettas. They difinitely are not for me.

Hello gents..just thought I would throw my two cents in to the pot here also, am going to have to say hands down my AK47 and my Glock 30 (45 cal) ..I own quite a few AR variants, and I love them, but when the heat comes down, who knows when you might have time to clean and oil your weapon...so the AK and its no nonsense reliability win..and the glock...I have also owned plenty of 9mm and 1911 45's , but none have the reliability , mag capacity and weight of my model 30...lets all hope we are allways prepared, but never have to make this choice for real...Chad Williams

                      Hey Lasse!
This really depends on the situation. Example: If I was fighting against a more totalitarian form of our current American Government (meaning if some fascist took over and starting abolishing rights and so forth) I would not want a vehicle. Reason being, the American planes could probably find it within a matter of hours or days. In this situation, I would basically act if I was VC. I have dug a tunnel like that before on my aunts cotton farm. It's really not that hard if you have the right equipment. I would stay in one place, and only move if I was spotted or my position reported. How would I know if my position was reported? I guess whenever I heard the Artillery come in. In that case I would have a "back up fox hole" to run to one the first shells are heard. If tanks rolled by in the woods that I would be hiding in, I would not fire on them. But if say, a squad of infantry came along, they would be fired upon by me and a few of my buddies.

On the other hand, if we were just fighting other people, no more Governments or anything, then ay first I wouldn't fight. But I am sure people would be really stupid about it, and wouldn't realize how close we all were to peace since there weren't anymore governments to tell us to go to war. So I would probably just have to resume fighting. Even in this case, if I had a vehicle it wouldn't be anything big. I would probably steel a Jeep, and a good, fast dirt bike.

As for a pistol, either a HK USP in .45 or a Glock 21. Rifle would have to be an accurized AK variant, or an HK G3A4Z (7.62, select fire with collapsible stock and scope).

I am intrigued by all the folks who want folding stocks. Why? A folding stock is to keep the weapon small while you are in a vehicle. They actually hurt the performance of the rifle.

Interesting split developing here. When pistol shooting was allowed here in the UK the .45 Colt was a very popular gun both because of the amount of 'bolt ob' goodies that were available for it and because it would feed and shoot almost everybodies reloads. That aside, the calibre never really took off in europe as it wasn't widely used by the military. Here in Europe 9mm in all of its many varieties is king and this seems to be reflected in the choice of pistols from the different continents.

I'm not saying one is better then the other but were the merde to hit the fan I wouldn't have a clue where to look for .45 ammunition or components whereas 9mm would be present in all police or army stockpiles. Its all academic as the ammunition is pretty useless without a pistol to put it through and our young war criminal of a leader put paid to that sort of activity pretty pronto.

                                Happy shooting, Peter
