I think I can smell the cold blue through the internet and out of my screen. Sorry, but the piece looks completely cobbed up, recently, by someone with rudimentary knowledge, poor skill or under the influence of intoxicants, a copy of Law's BOTW, a Dremel tool, some dies, and Brownells Oxphoblue. The stock has fake proofs, was sanded down, and likely was yanked off an import RC. That is probably where the whole thing came from. If a "vet" brought it back, he brought it back from Big Bob with the end cap at a recent gunshow. The floorplate and triggerguard are NOT renumbered, if that is any consolation. The piece has reenactor value only ($200 or so) as the parts are ruined by the renumbering. I stand firmly behind this analysis. Sorry for the bad news, but pulling your proverbial pud by telling you what you want to hear to make you feel good is not going to help you avoid getting burned like this in the future. Bring that POS back to the fraud that sold it to you and get a refund. Good luck and again, sorry for the bad news.

The stock has more repairs than I believe the Germans would've realistically made ......Although true the Germans tried to get every last mile out of their equipment, I doubt highly they were that hard up not to be able to spare a replacement stock....I see NO WaA number on one of the side stock proofs.....I cannot see the numbers well enough to comment but also believe I also see some cold bluing.....It's a hacked up K98k I'm afraid........Bodes

well dispite all of that i am happy with my rifle, it shoots great and thats mainly what i wanted out of it, i had planned on not shooting it alot because i thought it was worth alot of money, now this will be my shooter rifle and my quest for a true k98 will continue

but the reciever, barrel, rear site, and floorplate and triggerguard are worth something still?

Well Chris, that's what's important bro. And again, sorry for having to say those things, but they are the truth. If you run across another, feel free to email me and I'll help you however I can in authentication, as will the other fellows here.

Chris, Of course the upside is you can shoot this one without regards for hurting its value....The vast majority of high end firearms spend their lives in gun cabinets, gun safes, and gun racks.....There lives consisting primarily of an occasional handling and oiling....This one you can shoot, disassemble, or whatever you want without concern for harming it....Enjoy .....Bodes

The advice that is available here for the asking is amazing. I understand how it feels to find out that the "vet bring-back" is actually a Bubba job. I Would not buy another K98 unless I ran it past the people here in this forum.

As I type this, I am disassembling my Duv 41. It is sort of a "Frankenmauser" as it does not all match. Interestingly, the barrel, receiver, front sight and rear sight are from one rifle. All other parts, including stock, handguard, trigger, bands, floorplate, etc., are from another rifle. I can just imagine the history.

Regrettably, that book can cause problems for people. It's a great text, some of the guys here are credited in it, and it is the best thing out there, but flawed. I don't know if I own a single Kar.98k that matches those data sheets 100%. Most subjects (such as legitimate reworks) are not covered in sufficient detail. The only way to learn after reading that book is to get a good mentor and look at the real thing. Lot's of renumbered and conartistry out there today. But there are alot of guys willing to help. Good luck.

Is this book similar to Duff's Garand book?

Backbone of the Wehrmacht is a good book but like you elude to has it's shortcomings....I agree like with most reference books, use it as a stepping stone to learning, NOT as gospel.....Bodes
