K98 Bayonet for Review

Hi to all,

I pick up this k98 bayonet which is in excellant condition. Its scabbard is maker marked "Coppel G.m.b.H. 1939" with the serial number 3786i. The tip of the scabbard is stamped with WaA25? The bayonet blade is also stamped with the serial number 3786i. There is no maker mark or Waffenamts on the blade or handle, is this possible? Looks like a nice S84/98 bayonet,1939 by Coppel GmbH Solingen matching,all parts WaA253 proofed, about blueing on first part of blade is hard to say from these pictures, could be small used. b.r.Andy

Its not typical, maybe there is 39 on spine? normally on pommel should be WaA253 twice stamped, Do You have any detailed pictures of reverse ricasso and pommel where normally would be the stamping? press button is proofed, is possible the blanko production was mixed by Coppel to realise Wehrmacht contract. Side by side comparison of serial numbers and other markings or areas as ricasso and pommel could help. b.r.Andy

Hi Andy,

Here is a photo showing both serial numbers side by side. Beside the serial number I see no other markings on the bayonet itself. I did not check under its grips.

Thanks for adding details,it looks like identical stamp, so certainly a Coppel 39, the bayonet was possible unmarked and later used in the Wehrmacht contract. Maybe there are stamps under flashguard and other parts, in that period were grips,flashguard all proofed normally. b.r.Andy
