    German Municipal Police Bayonet

    Hello
Picked this Bayonet up in November at auction, what do you think about it!

WWII German municipal police bayonet with frog, portepee, and scabbard. Thirteen inch blade . The mark of the manufacturer--Alexander Coppel--appears on both sides of the blade near the hilt. "A 34" etched on top edge of blade near hilt and top edge of handle. Hand guard has "S.G.I. 45." etched into surface. Handle is made of antler plates with an iron eagle on one side. Pommel shaped into an eagle's head. Frog marked "Hansrommer 1937 Neu-ulm" on back side. Portepee attached to frog. Leather on scabbard has some scratches and imperfections.

    Thanks!
    Armen.

Looks like a legit and typical example for ACS. Is the scabbard also marked the same 'S.G.I.45.' on the reverse of the upper throat fitting? (S=Schutzpolizei, G=Gumbinnen, I=Duty location, 45=weapon number)? Technically a brown frog is Gendarmerie related and the Schupo should have a black frog. Seems like a lot of these have been mixed up over the years.

I believe the Portepee is for rural police, not municipal police. Nevertheless, it's a nice looking police bayonet that appears to be in excellent condition.

The knot is an NCO knot that I believe is appropriate for either Schutzpolizei or Gendarmerie.

The frog is perfectly period & a very nice example of a Gendarmerie frog. What Dave was saying is that to be completely correct, the frog for your bayonet should be identical but in black which would match the scabbard.

The bayonet itself is a very nice Alcoso product. Is the scabbard marked with the same number?

May I ask you what are my option or treatment I may apply to the frog. I don't think anything has been done to protect or preserve the leather for long time. As can be seen on the pictures are old cracks and like to get a prognosis as for possible dryness issues in regards to the frog.

                        Thanks!
