I love these partial, nice Aesculap Brian, looks good with signs of wear, every single mark just part of it's history. These daggers always stimulate the imagination, if only they could talk. I think a lot can be forgiven with Röhm daggers full or partial because of their history, been around a long time as well. This did strike me as an NSKK dagger, scabbard certainly looks black, Tip doesn't detract for this being a nice rare dagger with what looks like some wear from a triple hanger on the handle & wear to the rear. What remains of the inscription still looks good hard to photograph I know.
I wish I could find the piece Paul Hogle @ Lakeside Trader wrote which described the scene of an SA man coming home after a hard day having a beer and then have to scratch the Röhm name off any way he could.I para-phase There was more, a very well written piece by Paul but can't find it on his site any more.
I expect some showed more haste than others, I've seen one just scratched through with a screwdriver a few times. Being an Honour gift & depending on the reason they were given the dagger I would think keeping at least some of the inscription must have meant something to some as well as different interpretations of the edit. Here are some photo's of my Haenel Partial with similar removal technique, more pics on link below.
