thanks a mint, fred-
re ss degen production, weren't these swords made well into the war period in stainless ('rostfrei') steel - presumably a strategic material; along with, of course, alu for airframes etc.?
or was it thought a few stainless models could be made3 or maybe just held at the dachau prod site 'just in case.'? dw

And things have not quite settled down as yet - but I can offer this brief observation. It was not just aluminum that was an issue. Relatively early in the war Reichsführer-SS und Chef der Deutschen Polizei Heinrich Himmler stated that his beloved SS Degens were no longer available (for distribution) because of steel allocation quotas. garry- thanks for the neat pix!
actually, I'm quite sure the kid 3rd from right, post 163, pushing the barrel is wearing a hj 'messer; all the others in your pix are facing the other way or their left sides are obscured so we cant tell.
still, if only one lad is in fact 'carrying' that raises its own Qs. of uniform regulations or consistency in the enforcement thereof. cheers,
dw

- in the south of the Netherlands (between Venlo and Eindhoven), near the German and Belgium border
see: "Belt Buckle and Brocades of the Third Reich" by Angolia, page 259 lower photo, page 259. He is anyway DJ as he does wear the black field-cap as according 1933 regulations.
The dagger is the regular HJ version

BTW: Stainless steel alloys normally have not just nickel, but chromium etc. in varying degrees and I may have some period technical data on that aspect.

So what i can gather from all the opinions these so called DJ knifes are nothing more than a common scout knife made for the masses at some point during the TR period, then some guy buys a load of these scout knifes post war & says hey i have a box of hj knife daimond insignias in the garage i think i,ll drill a hole in the scabbards & affix the hj insignias & sell them on as DJ knifes for mega bucks
What company made them again ?

some may recall near the start of this thread I proposed a poll - believers vs. non-believers. maybe this could broaden to include category #3 - the agnostics.

But I do have a problem with the idea of the “TR period” aspect of the small knife for the masses. Unless of course somebody honestly thinks that the “Olympic” knife I posted is TR period manufacture. And it’s not a lone stranger when it come to the postwar manufacture of the small knives. Fred
