The ACS is a police bayonet, that's what the eagle mark on the spine denotes. These aren't very common and the condition looks great. The matching scabbard should have no serial number. They're considered "commercial" pieces and therefore don't have the Waffenamt mark.

Fireman bayonets usually have black frogs. Brown is usually Luftwaffe, and your LBA mark is a Luftwaffe mark. Not to say they weren't worn together, but not typical.
A very nice haul!! As for the Luftwaffe marked frog, it IMO really belongs on a general issue combat bayonet. With my guess being that it was a GI or collector who put the two together at some point in history at, or after the end of the war. Agreeing that no German Army Waffenamts is the general rule for Police bayonets, but noting that there is a very limited exception for one of the other Police combat bayonet makers (but not Coppel). Thanks for the input about the ACS - and yes, there is no number on the scabbard, so I guess it is one of these more uncommon commercial one's then? Great

Not really. Coppel (ACS) seems to be the most prolific maker of the German Police bayonets. And the “commercials” include a number of other combat bayonets like those for the: German Railway, Postal, the (so-called) “mid war commercials”, the export models, etc. Which is not to say that they are as commonly seen as those for the Wehrmacht with the Coppel here being a good find. Nice find! The commercial, Police issued SG84/98 III is the best and most valuable piece of the group.

Of the identifiable as to the non-Wehrmacht SG 84/98’s, the commercial combat type bayonets I mentioned are generally accepted as known period items. With the SS (which is heavily faked) in a time sensitive class by itself, having for example some period W/SS photos showing units armed with the Czech Vz 24 bayonet. So I would be very interested in seeing what an identifiable commercial: Grenzschutz, RAD, HJ, or NSKK, SG 84/98 bayonet looks like. Acknowledging that auxiliary groups in the field in combat areas could be armed. FP

I happen to like combat arms in general, so you won’t get an argument from me. With what I find interesting is that while I see the standard more decorative police sidearms in relatively large quantities. The combat types, at least in my experience, are much harder to find. With the Coppel here IMO being a “keeper” in excellent condition. FP

Wow guys - great pieces of information, much appreciated!

Seems like there was a real little treasure hiding in this group Initially I thought it's a standard K98 ... but obviously not *yeah* What kind of value are we talking about - I have absolutely no clue.

Thanks again and enjoy the beauties like I do!

I do not mean the bayo´s, showing several "fantasy-etching´s" !

The organisations, I mentioned, purchased the SG84/98III for themselves and, as far as I know, they´re not especially marked.

But, I noticed several different spine-markings on commercial bayonets, used in the Police.

Reibert, Like German Police guns different style markings are seen - until the Police markings on bayonets were discontinued fairly early in the war (the guns continued to be marked). And there are of course unmarked commercial bayonets with some of the early ones identical to those with German railway markings - noting those markings themselves were post manufacture and seem to be done inconsistently at a local level. And some others which went to the SS before it was able to draw arms from Wehrmacht stores. But I’m very hesitant to assume that some of those mentioned were customers for combat bayonets without some photos or other kind of evidence.

With a case in point being the Grenzschutz which was a fairly late organization (1944) using customs officials that had been taken away from Reich Finance Ministry control to be under the German Police. With the earlier Reinforced Frontier Control (Verstärkter Grenzaufsichtsdienst - VGAD) which was under the Finance Ministry, losing part of its autonomy to the GESTAPO (Police) before Germany began expanding its borders in 1938. With another bayonet I did not mention being the R.F.V. (Reichsfinanzverwaltung) marked SG 84/98 combat bayonets because they have Waffenamts/military style markings. And seem to have been from Wehrmacht production (not commercial bayonets). Best Regards, Fred

First, we have a Hoeller Dress Bayo - again in great condition! Comes in frog and still has the red felt in the grip. The blade is just as nice as it can get.
