I believe Tom Wittmann does mention Gold Army Daggers in his book. I left my copy at a friends house today or I would be able to state what page it's on. I think it was in the price guide section.

That's the Eastern Territories one Eric, RMBO A local antique dealer found one close by for $50................ I've been trying to fish it out of him.

Mmmm offer him $100 IMO the RMBO daggers are neat but not worth the premium, plus finding a collector/buyer is even rarer!

well at the rate the gold wash comes off my guess is they are pretty hard to tell any more after this many years of handling .Plus how many times have we seent someone say i need to shine this thing up a bit. and well there goes everything. I pulled the file on mine it is unmarked blade .I did not mention any of the parts as being this maker or that gee go figure.So for me i guess mine is a fake i will sell it .

I had a gold wash on a walk in years ago at a show come to my table I looked at it along time and payed a fair price for an heer dagger not an general dagger the hanger were also gold plate and very orante. Is it a general yes in my mind but the promblem lies out there on the internet not one person will chime in and say yes but offer it at a heer price and boom it sells like a hot cake. I have owned a number of Luft daggers, and the finish on this dagger in no way resembles the gold seen those daggers. ............. but all components show an even toning. The ferrule is slightly lighter and more polished, likely due to a difference in materials. This is also seen in some of the standard silver daggers at times, I believe..............

If all of the parts were actually gold plating applied over zinc with the same plating bath they all should look alike. Because gold is gold - and it does not age/tone like silver, zinc, or brass, lacquer etc. However, zinc chromate itself is and was available in multiple colors, and like many other materials varied depending on the batch.

And what is the explanation for the front of the cross guard with the eagle - because it looks to be completely lacking any kind of gold/golden finish in the crevices? Or for the appearance of some of the other places where it’s obvious that significant corrosion took place? FP

Why do the hangers have an inconsistent wear and finish as well? Note the bright buckles, the other hardware finish/wear does not match....... Looks played with to me.

Here's mine . Bought it over 25 years ago when the only descent books around was the Johnson series . I wasn't at all sure about it so I sent it in to TJ for authentication/appraisal . He said it's all original. It's got that same corrosion situation on the scabbard as the dagger that started the post.

One of the things I have learned in my travels on the Internet is that imaging is not as good as looking at things in person. But it's still much better than pictures in a book which all too often lack detail. But with some effort and possibly a better camera, some very good results can be achieved taking close ups - which is all you are really doing when "in hand". Which is what I tried to do with image enhancing using the latest set of pictures. But like many processes, it doesn't always work out like you hope it will. With for example this last set of pictures. That show relatively large areas of a scabbard that is quite noticeably lacking even the pebbling that should be visible when they were enlarged. FP
