Fred, you are of course correct. Zink chromate comes in a number of shades, and can be accomplised to varied quality standards. I worked in the Nuclear Engineering field for 35 years, we used and tested a number of these coatings for use on close proximity conventional systems. The coating is very distinct with in hand inspection.

Just wondering, would it be proper issue for a General or Field Marshall to wear a standard officers dagger and hanger?
