I also believe that 70+ years old leather can be very well preserved and still look new. I own two aluminium LW swords with great leather on their scabbards and handles, 100% original but look like new. Leather itself is very "tough" material, that will not deteriorate very easy if kept in right environment.

So true...environment is everything. My items are temperature and humidity controlled. I can't afford to buy them again!
