    Thanks Billy,

I'm not that good on etched blades, but you pretty much confirm my thoughts. Terry looked at it a few years ago and gave it his blessings.

I would like to ask Billy to take a closer look at the original postings - I believe what you're seeing as "the obviously cracked grip plate" is actually a CREASE in the FAX paper where it was FOLDED to fit into an envelope! Of course we need Robert to verify this - but I stand by my original observation.

Here is my Eickhorn sans the distributor logo. Looks just like the last one shown. I wish the photos of Robert's were clearer.
I think the prices being quoted on these etched bayonets is much lower than they should be.

                    Bayonet

If you go to ebay and search item #250498225945 it is one of redicks bayonets with stag grips. The pictures of the engraving are not the best . I going to try to get him to email them to me for posting.

                      James,

You may be right but aside from the grip plates & whether they're cracked or not, I'd be very concerned if the etch borders are in any way not fully straight & complete. I think the pics of the original bayonet are admittedly bad so anything's possible.

Many of these more modern etches can be easily verified as fake by looking at the poor workmanship. Handling as many original period etched bayonets as you can is the easiest & best way IMO of learning what the quality of real pieces looks like. It's also the best way of recognizing modern etched pieces of clearly lesser quality & workmanship.

That said, some of the newer etches coming out of the former Eastern Bloc are very well done, even to the point of using specific etches with blades showing the same maker that would have originally sold that specific etch.

                      Bill,

                      Nice looking original Eick =)

                        Etched Bayonet

Well thanks for the replies. I never got to see the bayonet. I rang the number and the woman had a middleman helping out to make sure she didnt get ripped off. He had a price in mind already $500AU so I told him I thought it too high and it may have issues. The story was a humdinger it belonged to an 89 year old lady whose husband died 2 years ago. He was in the HJ and this must be original as they had owned it since the war. Only now can she part with it they have no children only had each other and this good samaritan. He had someone willing to pay $500. He went on to name a few dudes in the militaria racket here downunder mainly known neo nazis, guess he was trying to impress me. So we will never know if it was the real deal or not.
                        cheers Robert

What a dog. Take note of the ugly grips, it's never a good sign when you see chunky stag grips like this. Period grips usually have a nice & graceful fit. These pieces are just way too thick as is the pommel push button & mortise key. Modern production hilt IMO. Also, I've never seen an etched piece by Clemen & Jung previously, I don't believe they had a line of etch patterns of their own. The etch looks to be fashioned after a Höller pattern. You can see a similar type reproduction piece with a Paul Weyersberg mark on pages 45 & 47 of Wayne Techet's book.

Note someone already welched on paying for this piece, maybe someone tipped the previous high bidder off after finding out it's bunk. A shame somebody's going to lose a lot of money on this one, it's over $280 already.

Grip plates very poorly fit to the hilt, especially noticeable near the crossguard & by the pommel. Very chunky overall appearance of the hilt & mortice key. Yuck! I strongly suggest anyone interested in etched bayonets get Wayne's book "German Etched Dress Bayonets, Extra Seitengewehre 1933-1945". Lots of great pics & a ton of super info.

Here is mine. A short Eickhorn with single etched blade. The grips are a little bit corroded and the scabbard is rusty as hell, but the blade looks nice. Please look at the etch and tell me, what you think about it´s originality.

                                Thanks for any input!!
