Greetings all
I have just aquired this dagger from the N.Z vets son in Christchurch, I have included some quotes from an Italian WW2 site, was wondering if anyone here knew any more about these daggers? It is really quite a lovely piece.
Quotes follow:
1935 Italian Navy San Marco Marine Daggers. There are two types that were issued and I am looking for both types. First, Regia Marina (Royal navy) dagger with black molded bakelite grip and four finger groves on the handle. Same blade as the MVSN dagger. Second,The Blaskshirts had a detatchment assigned to the San Marco Marines and they had their own dagger. It is smaller than the Regia Marina model. It also has a black bakelite grip but with no finger grooves on the handle and it has a lion head pommel. I will buy any authentic Example. Look out, there are fakes. The key to an original piece is the material that the handle is made of. Handles on period pieces were only made from Bakelite.
San Marco Marines (St Mark Marines, based in Venice), the handle is made from black bakalite and is a styalised lions head with waves, representing venice. A nice piece and not often seen.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
