    5 Watt sender (need help)

    Hi, Crew.
I just recently got hold of a nice 1938 dated 5 Watt sender for my collection.
    Here are some pictures:

    And together with Torn.E.b :

    #2
It is a very nice early radiotransmitter, but here comes the "(need help)" part. The transmitter is not in working condition. The insides is very complete, and it looks very good, but the transmitter has been in the hands of a unexperienced radio amateur.
He has tried to alter the frequenzy of the 5W.s. by modifying the lower spools inside the radio. As you will see from the pictures, he has failed miserably. The coils are a total mess at this point.
But the good news is, that I have a friend (who is a wizard when it comes to repair old and sometimes very damaged radios. He has previously actually repaired ground-dug radios, by rebuilding them from total wrecks into working condition radios) And my friend can repair the damaged coils.
Here are the pictures of the inside:

And here are the pictures of the (two lower) damaged coils under the covers. (They are the "Leistungskreisteil" and the "Steuerkreisteil") The upper "Antennenteil" is undamaged:

    Undamaged antennacoil:

What I need help with, is pictures of original un-messed with coils in a 5W.s. We do know the original frequenzies, we have the right cotton insulated wire to repair them, but we need good pictures of original coils, so that we can count the windings. The plan is to repair the transmitter back in to working order.
So, if there are any collectors out there, who has a original 5 Watt sender, who is willing to help me with this, I would be most greatful. I need both pictures seen from the top, seen from the side, and in a 45 degree angle of both spools.

    Best Regards
    Björn

I love this early equipment. I just put mine with some other bits ready to have a play (and photosession) in the garden:

I mine is an early Telefunken build example, but I assume the coils will have been the same as the examples build by Seibt. I tried to get as many angles on the coils as I could:

        Wow. Thanks Funksammler.
I'm Speechless.. That is a stunning collection with very early equipment. I just Love the Spez.445 Bs and the accsessories you have collected.
I still have quite a way to go, and lot of collecting to do, to be able to put up a display like this. Just fabulous!
And thank you ever so much for taking the time and labour, to have the pictures of the coils taken. I think (and hope) that these pictures is what my friend needs, (at least it is exactly what he said that he would need) to be able to rebuild/repair the coils in my 5W.s.
I will keep you updated with the Progress, when he get started on the project.

Best Regards, and Greetings from Norway

I hope he can fix the coils!

I picked up this very early "Taste P" recently to go with my 5 W.S. Fairly short natural rubber cable (which has had better times) and a warning shield rivited to the cover:

          <a href="http://s672.photobucket.com/albums/vv86/Funksammler/?action=view&amp;current=DSC03817.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i672.photobucket.com/albums/vv86/Funksammler/DSC03817.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

          It should clean up nicely!

good luck with your 5 W.S., keep us posted on the results!

Very nice 5 W.S. Bjørn. Hope you get it fixed. Do you have also a front lid?

If someone has a junk 5W.S. they want to part with (as long as it has the complete switching arm, I'll gladly take it.

Beautiful 5W.S. Björn. I am very interested in your progress with it.

Thanks for the nice comments, guys.
I have now sent it to my friend, who will do his best to repair it. I will keep you updated on the progress, and let you know what is happening.

@Val: No, unfortinently the front cover is missing. So the cover is also one of the parts that I am looking for.

Now I am trying to find more original parts for it. I know of two U5a Umformers for sale, I guess I will be buying one. (complete with transport case, spare parts and front lid)

Hi. I now have a update on the progress on the repairwork on my 5W.s.
My friend has been working on the transmitter the last few days. He has been working on the oscillator unit, and the radio is now working on all four bands.
There is a small drift in the frequenzy, due to a small weakening in the "abstimmkondensatoren" (don't know the english word for these capacitors) But We have decided to not replace them, as the drift is so small, and the radio works fine with them as they are. (I'm not planning to go to war with this radio anyway)
The radio transmitts on just the oscillator at the moment, and my friend will start reconstructing the antennacoil during this week. A large portion of the antennacoil has been removed, and my friend is going to reconstruct this part of the coil. (he told me that it will look cosmetically almost like the original)
Here is a picture that I have edited together from Funksammlers antennacoil to the left, and the remnants of the antennacoil on my 5W.s. You can clearly see that there is missing a large portion of the coil here.

My friend has also tested both the RS 241 radiotubes, and both of the tubes are in as new condition.
The Voltage meter is working ok on 330 and 4V measurings. The antenna power meter has not been tested yet, but When the antennacoil is reconstructed we will have a update on this too.
He will send me pictures of the progress sometimes later the upcoming week. I'll post them when I get them.

                  Cheers
                  Björn

                    Hi Bjørn,

Nice to see the progress. And although you are not planning to go to the war with this radio, there's still a field trip in order - as you did with your feldfu

                      Hi Val.
Haha. Yes, a field trip is in order when the radio is finished and I get it in return. I just have to collect a little more zubehör first. I have already made a deal to buy the 330 volt cable from la5he@yahoo.no (Thanks Ragnar), and I have to get a working U5 Umformer, so that I can power up the radio with a 12 volt car battery. I will then film and record a test transmission from the 5W.s. and post it here.
I am looking foreward to get the pictures of the repairwork from my friend. I'll post them here, when I get them.

                      Cheers

                          Hi, all.
Today I got a couple of pictures of the restoraton progress. My friend has just finished with the rewinding of the two lower coils.
(pictures are not of the best quality, but they clearly show what has been done)

The radio is now transmitting just as it should. The next step is to repair/reconstruct the antenna coil and mechanic functions of the parts that was removed.
This is looking very good so far. Althou my friend did not use original black insulated thread for the coils, this is so much much better than the totally messed up and non-functioning coils that was in this transmitter when I first got it.
And now, it actually can be used to transmit, as it originally could.
I almost can't wait to see (and test) the final resault, when the repair/restoration is done.

                          Cheers

                            Hi, all.
I have now some great news. My friend is finished with the restoration of the 5W.s. All three coils has been rewinded, and my friend has tested the radio with 4m Stabantenne, and 15m drahtantenne. According to my friend, he set the radio at 1413KHz and transmitted music. He then took his car, and tested the signal up to 9 kilometers yesterday. It works perfect now. He said it will proberbly cover a few kilometers more, but he did not test the maximum range. He also said that it will proberbly have double range at nighttime.
He will send it back to me on Monday. I almost can't wait until it arrives. I will post more and better pictures of the repairs that have been done, when I get it.

And I also bought shirts with the 5W.s. picture for me, my wife and the kids.

                            http://www.zazzle.com/vintage_wwii_s...92659748011664

My wife calls me a nerd, but I don't mind - I take it as a compliment..
I think she looks quite nice with the 5W.s. anyway

                            Cheers

Yesterday, i got hold of a nice 1937 dated Umformer (U5a1) for my 5W.s. There was no accessories and transport case with the U5a1, and it was covered with a centimeter thick layer of dust. (no joke)
Anyway under all the dust was a very nice original finish preserved and after a couple of hours with cleaning, it turned out very nice.

And today, I got the 5W.s. back from repair. I put together some cables and powersupply, out of some odds and ends from my parts box. I have made a very good useable 5 Volt cable, and I have put together a improviced 330 Volt cable, that I can use, until I recieve the original cable from la5he@yahoo.no.
I have also put together a 12 volt cable, and a connection box, wich proberbly comes from a radio wehicle.
Here's what I put together this evening:
