Tropical M40 Cap with Edelweiss

    Rare maker and very interesting example because there is no RB number in the later model tropical cap with sweatband.

    One can never say for sure when the Edelweiss was put on the cap. However, I like it very much. Could have been a mountain unit Afrika 42-43 or Italy 43-44,

          Well done, Peter! Solid wee cap. Not the nicest of insignia applications but very typical of this maker.

            Thanks Mark! Yes, I have seen other caps from this maker with almost identical hand stitching, I think it adds to the character of the cap.

            I'll be interested to look very closely at the edelweiss application, stitching, imprint and oxidisation on the cloth when I get the cap.

              Agree nice late model cap.

              No one can say for sure when the edelwiess was added, sure appears post war though to an un-issued cap. Could have been added back in the 60's or 70's and it could look like it was from the war too....

                There were unissued caps like that taken from over-run German stores and convoy trucks in both Afrika and Italy during the war. You also run across new uniforms, new shoulder boards and new belts etc from the same source. I have pictures of New Zealand soldiers dressed up in captured unissued German uniforms.

                Equally I know of a cap in that sort of new condition brought back from a German soldier of the 164th Light Division captured at El Alamein. He was probably a replacement reserve newly arrived at the front.

                As already stated who can say for sure but there is more than one possibility that must be considered,

                  Exactly, unissued is unissued captured or not. Could have been added anytime recently or otherwise. No one will ever know for sure....think we both have said his twice now

                    "unissued with Edelweiss applied by stores personal during WW2"

                    and

                    "issued, Edelweiss applied by stores or by soldier but not used a lot before capture"

                    The lack of finish on the fold down part of the sweatband could all add up to WW2 use ???
                    It may even have been reshaped since the war,

                      The lack of finish is just wear from the cap sitting on a flat surface like a shelf over the years etc. (not on a manniquin). Have seen this before on many caps with a sweatband including tropenhelms.
