Birds fine. Just has some dirt rubbed on it to add the the "field used" look. I would be interested in the bird if the cap is sold as a repro and the eagle is removed. Im with you guys on the cap not being legit.... Sorry. Its a very good attempt in my opinion and would be a great space filler for someone. Matt

Personally I think the cockade is a repo. To date it’s never been seen on any know original cap.

The problem you face, if one is going to spend $3000 plus on a M40 DAK cap , you only want a 100% text book example

The gromments appear to be hand painted which is another red flag

The cockade and these caps has been discussed in this thread

Many thanks to all who have responded. As mentioned initially, this type of cap is not without controversy. So far, the predominant trend has been to say the cap is a reproduction. That may ultimately be true, based on the discussion referenced above, which I did not know about, but which also has some favorable input on this type of cap from a well-known tropical collector, who has not weighed in here so far. When considering this cap originally, I asked for his help in vetting the cap, which he graciously provided, with the obvious result that I purchased the cap. The person who looked at the cap in hand is not an active member of this forum (as far as I know), but his is a household name among tropical collectors. (I am not a tropical collector, per se, because I collect by combat arm and not by theater, so I tend to seek the advice of others in the particularly difficult field of tropical collecting.)
Anyway, I'll let this run its course and then put it up for sale.
        Best to all!

          Bob,

even the old guard makes mistakes, contrary to what many on this forum believe. If he is still of the opinion that this cap is good then I have to say he was mistaken. Everyone makes mistakes and thats no big deal but at the end of the day the cap is still not able to stand on its own merits and that is what carries weight. If a cap or any item for that matter can't stand on its own merit then why have it? I think these are very well done reproductions but reproductions none the less. I am no where near as versed as several members on this forum and off of the forum, but I still think its an extremely well put together fake that would kick 98% of collectors if they came across it on their own. Hell I would be tempted to call it good if it weren't for the amount of hours I have spent learning about Heer tropical insignia and im still learning in that field and especially with the variations in caps from maker to maker. I feel that this cap is best summed up by a fight club line, "sticking feathers up your butt doesn't make you a chicken". A repro is still a repro regardless of the quality. Of course this is simply my opinion. Matt

DAK Cap - Good or Bad?

Hi Guys, Hope you don't mind but I have joined your forum for advice. I have been offered a cap (at a price that assumes it is authentic) but am not expert enough to know a good one from a dud. Pictures can be viewed at: http://s575.photobucket.com/albums/ss19 … ript1/DAK/
Would really appreciate any help or advice.

Need Advice regarding this DAK M40 Cap

This cap was presented to me as an original cap, but now I have some questions regarding the authenticity. One thing that concerns me is that the thread which fastens the white waffenfarbe to the cap glows under a black light. That is the only thing which glows. Your opinion(s) are appreciated

Agree Mark, obvious fake. Fake insignia too. Makers stamp is misspelled etc
