I think that fakers simply buy a good cap to study, maybe they even buy it here, take it apart to copy etc, it's no lost money, it only takes one stupe and one fake cap to cover their loss ..
Most dangerous thing will be that the guy with the right feeling, the right knowledge and right material starts copying things ..
There's still great interest to provide us with "original "items, it's the monster we created, high prices keep the wrong people busy, hence all the lots of original thread etc. on ebay, which are sold out immediately all the time, this aren't collectors, collectors don't need 25 rolls of era thread etc.
Even high end dealers have loads and loads of this stuff, which is not for sale, but for " their own use " ..., then there're the boxes full of shoulder straps, pathes, eagles, also not for sale, hence the 13500 all original tunics with cuff tittles I saw last 10 years ..
Illusion might be right word .

    Jos.

Are you guys saying a lack of grommets is the "kiss of death"? Or the zig-zag sewn cockade?

I know I'm questioning some pretty big guns here...

I don't really care for the lining or the absence of any other markings. I'd also like to see some red fibers mixed into the wool blend but....

      1) the wool looks recycled. It would be hard to find that today although I admit, I haven't frequented any fabric stores lately.

      2) The eagle application looks good. Especially, how it was sewn on before the crown of the cap was assembled.

      3) I've seen heer bergs with no grommets; one grommet; two grommets... I've even seen a period photo of one with THREE grommets! To say a luft with no grommets was a fantasy, I think, is a generalization that I would not make.

      4) Puffy cockades are normally hand sewn but, once again, to say they were NEVER applied this way?

The Luftwaffe single button field cap, was similar in appearance to the Heer Bergmutze but probably was never intended for mountain troops. I have never seen one without grommits and believe it was in the specifications. As for the insignia, I had an original with a puffy cockade that was machine sewn, but with black thread zig-zag sewn through the black portion of the cockade and the only one I ever saw . I have never seen it sewn like this, which like many new fakes; the sewing is over the top.
