!. The eagle is machine sewn on the sides, typically eagles on side caps are completely hand sewn. Do you want to own the only Luftwaffe tropical side cap with a machine sewn eagle ever seen?

    2. The fabric of the cap has a worn and abraded appearance, yet the grey-green thread sewing the cap together looks new and unworn. How do you think this can be possible?

    3. The construction of the cap is not textbook, a very bad sign.

Learn by studying known originals. Begin with this thread if you know of no originals in nearby collections.

Then come back to this cap and compare differences. Consider this homework, it is much better than being lectured, you will learn more and retain the details forever.

      Dear John,

Thanks for your explanation. I agree with you on most points, except that the eagle is both hand and machine sewn on the sides. It looks as if 2 different threads have been used.See pictures.

Then, I tried to make some better pictures of the grey-green thread which shows wear upon closer inspection. For me there was no red flag indicating new thread used on worn fabric.

I also agree that construction of the cap may not be textbook, but how much of it was really textbook?

For me, it is still an enigma, that when this cap is a fake one, more pieces like this one should be out there with the same stamping and way of construction.

So, if anyone has seen these caps before, would be more than happy to see some pictures.

      Regards

Where are the other originals like this one?

Authenticating something is not about figuring out where the fakes come from. Sorry. From your first post you indicated you liked it but you wanted other opinions. I don't know what else we can, or need to, say.
