That's the problem isn't it because I see things about your cap Frank that I would question but that don't necessarily mean it's a fake either..

I am a little confused on this comment and a bit suprised. Here is the entire cap.

Well, for instance, for a textbook M43, why just the one line of stitching around the top of the flaps?

Just to clarify, I'm not saying it's a fake, far from it, just highlighting how people look at these things differently and what they judge to be a potential red flag or not.

Not me personally Bryon, I'm somewhere in between. Shall we call it a frustating fondness?

Oh I know Ben, I was just having a bit of “fun”; frankly I couldn’t give a camel’s hump either way.
                    Best,
                    Bryon

I model my grumpy old man routine on you Bryon and like they say, imitation is the biggest form of flattery.

Oh, I agree, and thanks for the input.

                        Kindest Regards,

Very wise words indeed and different manufacturers of original Panzer M43's have slightly different production footprints. Some have one top row of stitching and some have two.

The thread about Luca's M43 is worth taking particular note of and it is interesting indeed how Luca's example in post number 16 matches Robert E's cap which started this thread almost exactly except for perhaps one row of circumference stitching. Even the satin liner is soiled in the same manner.

Perhaps Robert could post an image of the outside of the cap with the flaps pulled down to confirm if the stitching is there or not

Luca's cap is an original cap is it not so what does that tell us about this one,

                            Chris

I think it tells us that it's very difficult to get a consensus of opinion on a black M43, especially when we only have photographs to go on.

I agree totally Ben and would be interested to hear Luca opinion on this one.

The thing is that the intial reaction has made Robert feel like he has a real "plonker" and I do not think that is fair to him at all. He has put some thought into this cap. Seems to have done as much homework as one can sometimes with these and made a call.

The cap is no cheap joke so why do we make him feel like that and it deserves more investigation than some "one liner" write of. This one deserves to be checked point by point and then we could all have a clearer picture of its pros & cons.

At the end of the day none of us knows it all and many times some collectors are only guessing with some of these if if does not fit their particular realm of experience.

Full marks to you too Ben for raising the point that sometimes we all need to look outside of our comfort zone,
