Hi, it is a 2nd pattern Heer (army) pith and it was made by Johann Hückel und Söhne (JHS).

This type of pith was issued from 1941 onwards, though there is little evidence that they were used in Africa, instead they are thought to have mainly been used in Greece and other hot places.

I have always wondered whether this picture shows a 2nd pattern pith in use, as its in lots of books on the Afrikakorps. Anyone agree and also, does anyone know where and when this was taken?

I have another version which really makes it look like a 2nd pattern.

                      Thanks, JerryB

                          Hi Jerry

That photo is from Italy '43. So confirming the 2nd pattern was used in other tropical theaters other than Afrika. A few 2nd patterns show up in photos of the captured equipment piles in Tunisia (probably from replacement troops) at the end of the African campaign, not the DAK however, it had ceased to exist at that point...2nd patterns show up in the Ukraine, and Southern France too.

Thanks for the info Tim, I have long wondered where it was taken.

As I said, in my first post, there is little evidence for use of 2nd pattern piths by the Dak.
