It is most likely laquer impregnated paper that usually appears to be like a plastic material. Good looking cap.

I see nothing wrong with it at all - nice lid!

It's actualy a very interesting material. It's a paper or paper/wood pulp mix which is compressed in a mould. It's then painted or laquered.

If you put one of these in water, it will straighten out flat in a few minutes.

I have an ODD Olympia Classe cap that looks to have a similar visor to yours. These do seem to come up on other caps as the others have said.

Nice cap, and pionier branch too - let me know if you ever want to part with it (pionier is my area of interest )

Thanks for all the kind replies. I've been looking for insignia to resore it but having a bit of trouble. I know it's common insignia but the holes for the wreath seem to be in a diffrent area then the wreaths I've seen for sale. Most of the wreaths around seem to have prongs closer to the top when this one seems to be more centrally located. I definatly dont want to add holes to this hat! Guess I'll have to wait until one pops up with prongs in the correct location.

It's tough though, cant wait to see it with insignia!

One more question. Should I retore this hat with NCO cord or officers? I think it may have been officers due to the gold color liner. Any real way to tell the diffrence other then material quality?

Generally speaking I'd go by the holes where the chincord button go. The further back (past the meeting of the side panels), would be an Nco/Em cap. From the one pic it looks like the hole is pretty far back, Add that with the all metal insignia and my guess would be a private purchase Em/Nco cap. IMO
