Have you checked the weave of the material on the beret?

If not, take the beret off the crash helmet and hold it up to the light.

Look through the beret to the light.

You should see the distinctive circuler pattern of the weave.

I know nothing about these, but wouldn't the insignia be hand sewn on such an early piece?
