I think the real Holy Grail is convincing ourselves that we can distinguish branch colors when they are so close.

I can see the color difference in the two examples posted but they are close enough to be considered "the same color" based alone on the variation we know used by GJ in greens.

It is better IMO to identify it as signals because it to me looks like it is earlier than 1939 when Bau was introduced. The newly posted signals hat shows little wear and fading. I think they both started life the same color, or at least as close as manufacturing differences and dye variations allowed.

Like the greens- Nebel/JaG, Vet/Panzer, tsd/medical they overlap. I think the Bau cap could have also have been worn by a Krad unit officer wiithout causing a stir.

Brown is a tough color. You can compare the two hats you posted with variation for LW signals (generally same as pre 1936 Army) and become even more confused.

J , you can only distinguish the real color in hand , trust me both are different.

lieproo, those are some awesome pieces of headgear that would totally fit into my collection. After all, they are both officer's visors.
I agree with FMS-Paul, if there's any chance of getting an under side shot (especially of the early one) that would be terrific!

I personally would want to see the differences shown in a period color chart.

The problem trying to judge the colors now is complicated and compounded by fading, oxidization and wear etc. after 60-70 years. What you are seeing now in most examples is not the same color as when it was new.

IMO the hat is RH signals, if you have the Kraus book on Reichsheer it illustrates a piped signals tunic in there and the color is identical. The hat is too early to be anything else.
